Akfen Yenilenebilir Enerji Accelerates Digital Transformation in Energy Production with Artificial Intelligence

As part of an artificial intelligence-based project developed with Başkent University, Akfen Renewable Energy has developed a digital decision support system for production forecasting and anomaly detection at renewable energy plants. Trained with five years of real field data, the system aims to increase efficiency in energy management.

Akfen Renewable Energy, in collaboration with Başkent University, developed a digital decision support system based on artificial intelligence for production forecasting and anomaly detection in renewable energy plants. Trained with five years of real field data, the system aims to increase efficiency in energy management.

Akfen Renewable Energy, one of Turkey's leading renewable energy producers, added another project to its digitalization and artificial intelligence efforts. The company supported the "Artificial Intelligence-Based Energy Production Forecasting and Anomaly Detection System" project, developed by Başkent University Computer Engineering students under the university-industry cooperation framework.

In the project conducted during the 2025-2026 Spring Semester under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Oğul Göçmen, an artificial intelligence-based decision support system was developed by analyzing five years of real production data obtained from Akfen Renewable Energy's various hydroelectric and solar energy plants.

Real-time production forecasting and anomaly detection
The system, which jointly analyzes data from solar energy plants and hydroelectric plants, is capable of automatically detecting unusual production conditions while generating energy production forecasts. This way, energy managers are supported in data-driven decision-making processes.

Developed with a role-based access infrastructure, the system has different user panels for facility staff, facility managers, regional managers, and senior management. The system, which integrates alarm management, reporting, production charts, and analysis modules on a single platform, aims to make energy production processes more traceable, measurable, and predictable.

Will contribute to ISO 50001 compliance
The artificial intelligence-supported solution is expected to contribute to the effective digital management of ISO 50001 Energy Management System requirements. The system is also intended to create an important decision support infrastructure for improving energy efficiency and optimizing operational processes.

The project, planned to be delivered to Akfen Renewable Energy at the end of the semester, will be tested with real field data and evaluated as a scalable digital solution in the renewable energy sector.

Artificial intelligence applications in clean energy production are becoming widespread
The project developed in collaboration between Akfen Renewable Energy and Başkent University stands out as a successful example of university-industry cooperation in integrating artificial intelligence into renewable energy production processes. The work is aimed at contributing to the digital transformation of clean energy production within the scope of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal.
