2022 İKMİB Export Stars Awards Ceremony Held The export stars of the chemicals sector, Turkey's top exporting industry in 2022, have been determined. The eighth edition of the "İKMİB Export Stars Awards Ceremony," held annually by the Istanbul Chemical Substances and Products Exporters Association (İKMİB), took place on 16 June 2023. At the 2022 İKMİB Export Stars Awards Ceremony, 170 award winners were announced across 34 categories. Following its rise to second place in exports in 2019, the chemicals sector focused on achieving leadership, and succeeded in becoming Turkey's largest exporting sector in 2022 with record exports of USD 33.6 billion. The sector's 2022 export volume increased by 4.19% to 28 million 913 thousand tonnes. The chemicals sector, which achieved 32% growth compared to the previous year and raised the bar, increased its share in Turkey's total exports to 13.2%. The chemicals sector, which operates strategically in the economy by providing raw materials or semi-finished products to other sectors alongside its 16 sub-sectors ranging from plastics to paints and coatings, cosmetics to pharmaceuticals, provides significant added value to the country's economy. According to 2022 data, while global chemicals exports reached USD 7.2 trillion, the Turkish chemicals sector held 0.6% of global sector exports, ranking 37th. İKMİB, representing over 9,000 active exporting companies, accounted for more than half of Turkey's total chemicals exports, holding a 60% share. To honor and encourage its member companies in the chemicals sector for their successful exports, İKMİB held the eighth edition of the 2022 İKMİB Export Stars Awards Ceremony on 16 June 2023. The ceremony, which was also broadcast live on İKMİB's YouTube channel, was attended by Turkish Vice Minister of Trade Özgür Volkan Ağar, Turkish Exporters Council (TİM) President Mustafa Gültepe, İKMİB Board Chair Adil Pelister, and representatives of award-winning companies. At the Awards Ceremony, 170 companies that ranked in the top 5 across a total of 34 categories in chemicals sub-sectors and product groups were awarded.   Özgür Volkan Ağar: "Our fundamental goal will be to raise chemicals sector exports to the USD 50 billion level by 2028" Speaking at the awards ceremony, Turkish Vice Minister of Trade Özgür Volkan Ağar stated: "During this period, we will also continue our struggle to build a great and strong Turkey within the vision of our President's Century of Turkey. Under the leadership of our Minister, as an export family, we will continue our work with every effort and dedication. Despite all difficulties, our country's economy demonstrated growth of 5.6% in 2022, well above the global average, and our exports reached USD 254.2 billion, setting a new record in our Republican history. Thus, our country's share of global exports reached above 1% for the first time in history. Our export family has continued to grow day by day. Our chemicals sector is an extremely important sector for our entire economy with its wide range encompassing many sub-segments. In particular, due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, energy and commodity prices that initially rose sharply and then declined significantly, our chemicals sector exports in the first five months of 2023 decreased by 10.5% in value terms to USD 12.27 billion. However, we sincerely believe we will make up for this decline in the remainder of 2023, and that our exporters will achieve this. As the Ministry, we are moving forward with our exporters within the vision of achieving high value-added, innovative, competitive, dynamic, stable and sustainable exports. Within this vision, our fundamental goal will be to raise our chemicals sector exports to the USD 50 billion level by 2028. I sincerely believe we will reach and even exceed this target with outstanding effort from our exporters." Mustafa Gültepe: "The chemicals sector leads our sectors with the highest growth in recent years" Turkish Exporters Council (TİM) President Mustafa Gültepe, noting that they view award ceremonies as an opportunity to see the export family together, and stating that they are crowning successes together, said: "2022 was a year full of successes in exports. We took our goods exports to over USD 254 billion and our service exports to over USD 90 billion. We completed both goods and service exports in 2022 with records. We must open a special bracket here for our chemicals sector. Our sector, as in previous years, worked hard in 2022. It managed to increase exports in 14 of 16 product groups. It set the highest annual export with USD 33.6 billion. At the same time, our sector became the export champion in 2022. This sector exported to 227 countries and regions. In particular, the chemicals sector leads our sectors with the highest growth in recent years. In 2022, it took the number one position from the automotive sector, which had been first for many years. On the other hand, Turkey's major problem is the current account deficit. Therefore, I am inviting our industrialists and manufacturers to invest in Turkey, especially in areas where we have large current account deficits. I extend my thanks and gratitude to all our companies that contributed to this great success and added value to our exports. I hope their successes continue in the same way during our Republic's centennial year," he said. Adil Pelister: "With the Chemistry Technology Center, we will reduce our exporters' analysis costs by approximately 70%" İKMİB Board Chair Adil Pelister, who delivered the opening speech of the 2022 İKMİB Export Stars Awards Ceremony, stated: "As İKMİB, while fighting with all the difficulties of the pandemic, we organized the first digital purchasing delegation, the first digital fair organization, and the first digital chemicals industry convention. Following the difficult years of 2020 and 2021, we see that our country is now also in a recovery process like the world. We know that to enable the economic fluctuations that caused contraction to enter an upward trend again, we need high technology, innovation, and accordingly to create high added value. As İKMİB, with this motivation, we developed our Chemistry Technology Center (KTM) project. We will, God willing, hold the opening of the K.T.M. together. With the Chemistry Technology Center, which we will implement as a result of great efforts, we will reduce our exporters' analysis costs by approximately 70%, providing substantial savings in both money and time," he said. Pelister: "In line with our 2030 vision, our export target is USD 50 billion" Noting that the chemicals sector holds an important share in Turkey's rising exports, Pelister stated: "Our sector increased its exports from USD 17.4 billion in 2018 to USD 33.6 billion by the end of 2022, achieving great success and ranking first among all sectors. We in the chemicals sector carry out approximately 13% of the country's total exports. The chemicals sector will demonstrate its importance fully in the Century of Turkey. Because nothing can be done without chemicals. In this context, our vision is 2030. In determining our vision, we based it on compliance with norms and standards set out specifically with sustainability. We have created our chemicals industry sustainability action plan, which we will announce to the public in the coming days, and have set our export target at USD 50 billion. Furthermore, in the framework of our '2030 Vision' and in line with these targets, we are preparing to organize a major chemicals convention with national and international participation to create our Sustainability-Based 2030 Chemicals Industry Strategy together. As İKMİB, we conduct many activities. For the continuity of our activities, which we have no doubt about the benefits of and which receive participation and appreciation from our public administration, we are requesting that our limits be raised in parallel with real inflation from our Ministry of Trade. Particularly, it is an additional source of pride and importance for us to have a share in the financing support at İGE A.Ş., which was established as a credit guarantee system for export support to our exporters with SME status. We are aware of the importance of political stability and desire that economic stabilization and development be achieved in coordination with this stability. The narrowing of the inflation/interest gap and inflation/exchange rate gap to real levels and the regulation of access to financing stand out as our main expectations. We congratulate our exporters who will receive awards once more, and we pledge from now that we will sign much bigger projects together in the coming period and make efforts to take our chemicals sector to much higher levels," he said.
