According to data from Istanbul Chemists and Chemical Products Exporters Association (İKMİB), chemical exports in May 2019 rose 32.84 percent compared to May 2018, reaching USD 1.949 billion and breaking the monthly export record.
The chemical industry, maintaining its second-place position in exports, achieved five-month exports of USD 8.719 billion with a 24.43 percent increase.
The chemical industry, among Turkey's most export-generating sectors, continues to boost its performance in line with its goal of permanent second place in exports. In May, the sector achieved USD 1.94 billion in exports, marking its highest monthly export figure to date.
In the May ranking of countries receiving the most chemical exports, the Netherlands topped the list with USD 127.074 million in exports, followed by Spain in second place and Germany in third.
Our Sector is Increasing Exports with Great Effort
Adil Pelister, Chairman of the Board of Istanbul Chemists and Chemical Products Exporters Association (İKMİB), emphasized that the sector achieved second place in exports for five consecutive months in 2019, stating "The chemical industry is writing a success story in the export performance chart."
Commenting on the May performance of the chemical sector, Pelister said, "In May 2019, we achieved USD 1.949 billion in chemical exports with a 32.84 percent increase compared to May of the previous year. In the five-month period this year, our exports reached USD 8.719 billion with a 24.43 percent increase.
Despite the global economic situation, our sector is increasing exports with great effort and demonstrating high performance. Additionally, the exports achieved by our sector in May represent the highest monthly export figure to date.
We believe we will continue this successful export trajectory and hope that our exports will increase further through our activities and work targeting key markets."
Netherlands as the Top Export Destination
The Netherlands was the top export destination in May. Chemical exports to the Netherlands reached USD 127.074 million in May 2019.
In May, the main exports to the Netherlands included "mineral fuels, mineral oils and products", "plastics and plastic products", "inorganic chemicals", "essential oils, cosmetics and soaps", and "miscellaneous chemical substances". Five-month chemical exports to the Netherlands this year reached USD 306.940 million.
Other countries in the top ten following the Netherlands in May were Spain, Germany, Iraq, United Kingdom, Italy, Egypt, Iran, France and United States.
In the January-May 2019 period, the top ten countries for chemical exports included Spain, Malta, Germany, Italy, Iraq, Egypt, United States, Netherlands, Greece and United Kingdom.
Plastics and Plastic Products in First Place
In subsectors, plastics and plastic products ranked first in chemical exports. In May,
plastics and plastic products achieved the highest exports, ranking
first with USD 609.843 million.
In second place was
mineral fuels, mineral oils and products with USD 503.341 million in exports, while
inorganic chemicals exports ranked
third with USD 179.223 million.
Other sectors in the top ten following inorganic chemicals were: 'rubber and rubber products', 'essential oils, cosmetics and soaps', 'pharmaceutical products', 'paints, varnishes, inks and preparations', 'miscellaneous chemical substances', 'organic chemicals' and 'cleaning preparations'.
