Brutalist Architecture

Brutalism is an architectural movement that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. It stands out for its use of raw, unfinished materials, massive geometric forms, and focus on functionality. The name of Brutalism derives from the French word "béton brut," meaning raw concrete, and this material is one of the defining characteristics of the style. Brutalist architecture is generally associated with various complexes, universities, libraries, and cultural centers and other public buildings. Its monumental and imposing appearance makes brutalist design highly suitable for urban structures.

Origins

After the First World War, architects embarked on the reconstruction of Europe with an idealistic sense of optimism and faith in the potential of mechanical technology. International Modernism symbolized not only modernity but also the positive aspects of a world that had experienced significant upheaval and decline. However, the generation that followed the Second World War was less inclined toward idealism and had diminished confidence in technology. Brutalism brought a new perspective to the famous principle articulated earlier by Louis H. Sullivan that influenced the modernist architectural period and ultimately gave rise to the International Style: "form follows function." While International Style generally prioritized the smooth and efficient use of materials to achieve maximum efficiency, Brutalism tended to emphasize the bold and substantial qualities of building materials. Brutalism focused on the important and solid characteristics of concrete, steel, and stone by highlighting their weight, density, and overall mass. Emerging in the post-Second World War period, Brutalism was influenced by various factors, including the need for cost-effective construction in the rebuilding of war-damaged cities and the desire to create functional, honest buildings that reflected the modern age. Architects such as Le Corbusier and his ideas about "béton brut" were instrumental in shaping the movement.
Materials
Raw concrete is the distinctive material of Brutalist architecture. Buildings typically feature exposed concrete surfaces that can be either textured or smooth. Concrete used in Brutalist buildings can have a variety of surface types, including smooth surfaces, textured surfaces with wooden formwork marks, and even roughly finished surfaces. The use of concrete stands out not only for its durability but also for its ability to be transformed into bold, monolithic forms. Steel is occasionally used together with concrete to reinforce structural elements, provide support, or create complex details. It can also be used to add railings, balconies, or window frames. Glass use, while not as prominent as concrete, is applied in some Brutalist buildings in windows, facades, and entrance areas. Glass use can create contrast with the rough texture of concrete and allow natural light to enter interior spaces.

Examples of Brutalist Architecture

Two important architectural works by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, Unité d'Habitation and Maisons Jaoul, played a significant role in shaping the Brutalist architectural model. In 1947, when Le Corbusier was tasked with designing a multi-family residential project in Marseille to house people displaced by bombardments in France, Europe was still struggling with the devastation of the Second World War. Completed in 1952, Unité d'Habitation marked the beginning of a series of new residential projects by Le Corbusier and focused on communal living where building residents could shop, socialize, live, and interact in what he designed as a "vertical garden city." "Le Corbusier's concept of the 'vertical garden city' aimed to combine the idea of individual villas within a larger structure. This design enabled building residents to have their own private spaces while simultaneously providing common areas outside their private spaces for shopping, dining, exercise, and gathering. Maisons Jaoul, designed by Le Corbusier in the late 1950s and completed in 1956, is a significant example of Le Corbusier's later work and is recognized as an important contribution to Brutalist architectural style. It consists of simple, geometric forms and uses raw concrete as the primary building material. The two houses have a box-like appearance and feature flat roofs, a general characteristic of Le Corbusier's architectural style. Le Corbusier also incorporated elements of nature into the design of Maisons Jaoul. The houses are surrounded by gardens and green spaces, which provide a sense of peace and connection to outdoor spaces. Unité d'Habitation and Maisons Jaoul have had a significant impact in the field of architecture, particularly in the development of Brutalism. The bold use of concrete and simple, functional design elements have inspired architects and designers around the world.
Functionality
Brutalism is a movement that places strong emphasis on functionality. Buildings are designed to efficiently serve their primary purposes. This can be combined with a simple, utilitarian aesthetic where form follows function. In many Brutalist buildings, structural elements such as beams, columns, and load-bearing walls are typically left exposed. This serves a dual purpose: it communicates the simplicity of the building's structure and allows building residents to easily understand the building's structural system. This clarity in structural expression ensures that the building's design is simple and functional. Brutalist buildings typically have floor plans that maximize interior space while meeting the needs of building residents. Rooms and areas are generally organized logically, minimizing wasted space and ensuring that the building's intended functions are performed efficiently. Services such as heating, ventilation, and plumbing are typically integrated into the building's design in a functional and unobtrusive manner. Ducts and pipes may be exposed but are carefully arranged to ensure the efficient distribution of resources. Furthermore, Brutalist buildings typically incorporate features that enhance accessibility. Wide corridors, ramps, and elevators are integrated into the design to ensure that the building can be used by people with varying mobility needs. Although Brutalism is known for its bold, massive forms, many Brutalist buildings contain strategically placed windows and open areas to provide natural light to interior spaces.
