ELIX Polymers completes Life Cycle Assessment of more sustainable E-LOOP solutions. Environmental impact can be reduced through use of mechanically and chemically recycled products.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an internationally standardised methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product's life cycle. This methodology allows for scientific comparison of different products, the same products produced in different regions, and differences in recycling options.
ELIX has completed an LCA of its production based on ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 (Cradle-to-Gate analysis), accounting for customer reach and including direct emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions (Scope 2 and Scope 3).
ELIX has undertaken a full LCA, validated by the Anthesis Group, to investigate the environmental performance of more sustainable E-LOOP products and compare this with fossil-based polymers.
Anthesis is a global sustainability firm that supports cities, companies and other organisations in determining sustainability strategies and measuring and improving their environmental impacts.
This is part of the responsible innovation services ELIX Polymers provides to its customers. Further technical support is possible by analysing customer applications from an environmental perspective to select the right product with the best material properties for the required specifications and the lowest possible carbon footprint.
The LCA demonstrates that mechanically and chemically recycled products can significantly reduce the environmental impact of the final product and can support ELIX customers in achieving their sustainability targets.
It will also help ELIX Polymers achieve its target of ensuring that 25% of its product portfolio provides a sustainability advantage by 2025.
As consumers demand sustainable products and new regulations must be complied with, an increasing number of OEMs from different industry segments are requesting LCA values to compare different polymers with one another in order to reduce their environmental impact.
