Topsoe to Supply Technology for Saudi Arabia's 4.4 GW Green Hydrogen Project

Danish high-tech company Topsoe has been selected as the ammonia synthesis technology supplier for ACWA Power's 4.4 GW green hydrogen and ammonia plant planned in Saudi Arabia. The final investment decision for the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Project is expected to be made within 2026.
Danish advanced technology company Topsoe has been selected as the ammonia synthesis technology supplier for the 4.4 GW green hydrogen and ammonia facility planned by ACWA Power in Saudi Arabia. A final investment decision for the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Project is expected in 2026.
Topsoe will supply dynamic ammonia synthesis systems to enable production to adapt to fluctuating supply conditions from renewable energy sources. The company states that this flexible configuration will reduce the need for large-scale hydrogen storage, delivering significant savings in both capital and operating costs.
Engineering and Equipment Supply to Proceed Through International Collaboration
Topsoe will supply engineering services, equipment and catalysts for ammonia synthesis technology to Sinopec (China) and Técnicas Reunidas (Spain), which are conducting the front-end engineering design (FEED) for the project.
Annual Green Ammonia Production Target of 2.5 Million Tonnes
The Yanbu Green Hydrogen Project aims to:
-10 GW wind and solar energy capacity,
-4.4 GW electrolyser capacity
with an integrated structure to produce up to 2.5 million tonnes annually of green ammonia for export. If implemented as planned, the project will be among the world's largest green hydrogen projects.
Yanbu Industrial City, located on the Red Sea coast, occupies a key position in Saudi Arabia's hydrogen strategy. ACWA Power aims to bring the first phase of the project into operation in 2030.
Green Hydrogen Export to Europe Under Review
European energy companies Edison, TotalEnergies, ZheroEurope and EnBW continue to assess the commercial feasibility and demand potential for large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia exports from Saudi Arabia to Europe.
Driss Berraho, Head of Green Hydrogen Business Development at ACWA Power, stated that the agreement with Topsoe strengthens potential hydrogen trade between low-cost production regions and high-demand centres.
Feasibility Discussions Ongoing for Large-Scale Export Projects
However, discussions continue regarding the economic sustainability of large-scale green hydrogen export projects. It is known that the 2.2 GW Neom Green Hydrogen Project has undergone revisions to its plans due to low European demand.
While the Neom project is expected to produce 1.2 million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2027, limited long-term offtake agreements through 2030 is noteworthy. In this context, Air Products is reported to be working on new commercial partnerships for green ammonia.
