Samsung and AMD Unveil New-Generation vRAN Breakthrough

Samsung Electronics and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have announced a significant milestone in their collaboration covering 5G core networks, virtualized RAN and private network solutions. The companies continue to develop next-generation solutions for the commercial deployment of AI-powered, software-driven network technologies.

Samsung Electronics and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced that they have reached a significant milestone in their collaboration covering 5G core networks, virtualized RAN and private network solutions. The companies continue to develop next-generation solutions for commercial deployment of artificial intelligence-enabled and software-driven network technologies.

Under this scope, Samsung was selected by Canadian telecom operator Videotron to deploy 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) and 4G LTE core network migration solutions supported by AMD EPYC™ 9005 Series processors. The project aims to strengthen Samsung's presence in Canada and expand cloud-based artificial intelligence core network infrastructure.

Samsung also introduced artificial intelligence-enabled vRAN solutions running on AMD EPYC processors at Mobile World Congress 2026. Multi-cell tests conducted in Samsung R&D laboratories demonstrated that more scalable deployments and higher processor flexibility can be achieved in software-based network environments. This development shows that commercial-grade artificial intelligence-enabled vRAN performance can be reached on a fully virtualized software architecture without the need for additional accelerator hardware.

Keunchul Hwang, Vice President and Head of Technology Strategy Group at Samsung Electronics Network Business Unit, noted in his assessment of the collaboration that artificial intelligence-based open and virtualized architectures combined with advanced computing innovations create new opportunities for operators. Hwang stated that this approach helps operators scale their networks in a manner compatible with evolving technologies.

Derek Dicker, Vice President of AMD Enterprise Business Unit, emphasized that AMD EPYC processors were developed to address the intensive computing requirements of modern telecom infrastructure. Dicker said that vRAN tests conducted with Samsung proved that next-generation EPYC processors deliver high performance, efficiency and scalability to network operators.

The companies are also expanding their collaboration in developing artificial intelligence-focused enterprise solutions. Samsung introduced at MWC the "Network in Server (NIS)" platform, a fully virtualized next-generation Edge-AI solution supported by AMD processors. This solution enables operators to more easily integrate artificial intelligence into network infrastructure, reduce operational complexity and develop new service models.

Samsung's broad network portfolio spans from chipsets, radios and core network solutions to virtualized and open RAN architectures. The company aims to contribute to telecom operators' development of more flexible and scalable 5G infrastructure through artificial intelligence-enabled automation tools and cloud-based network solutions.
