DSM Engineering Materials Aims to Reduce Carbon Footprint

DSM Engineering Materials announced that it is accelerating its journey to reduce carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions, thereby enabling its customers to achieve their sustainability goals more effectively.   • Reducing total greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2, 3 upstream included) and the carbon footprint of its products by 50% by 2030 compared to 2016,
  • Using 100% renewable electricity at all manufacturing facilities by 2025 (it was 70% in 2020),
  • Achieving Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 on the path to Net Zero across all value chains by 2050.
  DSM Engineering Materials has a long track record of developing science-based and scalable solutions that enable customers to manage the challenges and opportunities of sustainability and increase market relevance by future-proofing their portfolios. Working together with strategic suppliers to raise the bar on sustainability goals, DSM Engineering Materials further differentiates its approach from sector peers, which typically limit greenhouse gas emissions to Scopes 1 and 2 only. Today's announcements are aligned with and reinforce DSM Engineering Materials' broader sustainability roadmap. In June, DSM announced that it had successfully halved the carbon footprint of Akulon® PA6 and also developed greenhouse gas reduction roadmaps for Stanyl® PA46 and Arnitel® TPC. On its path toward 100% renewable electricity, DSM Engineering Materials factories in Europe and China are already operating entirely on renewable electricity. DSM Engineering Materials has also committed to developing and commercializing bio-based and/or recycled-based alternatives for its entire portfolio by 2030; specific grades are already available for all major product groups. All these initiatives, including the transition to bio-based and recycled alternatives in general, will help DSM Engineering Materials achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 (through direct production and renewable electricity) on its journey to Net Zero across all value chains by 2050. To provide customers with full value chain transparency, carbon footprint data for all major grades based on supplier input and regionally validated are available for use by all relevant customers in DSM Engineering Materials' downstream value chain.
