Dow Signs Eight New Renewable Energy Agreements
Dow announced signing eight new renewable power purchase agreements (RPA) covering Europe and the Americas. The new agreements are expected to reduce Dow's Scope 2 emissions by more than 600,000 metric tons of CO2e (Carbon Dioxide Equivalent) annually.
The new RPAs provide the company with cost-competitive access to an additional 132 megawatts (MW) of clean energy capacity from wind and solar sources with zero capital investment, bringing Dow's total access to more than 850 MW of clean energy, exceeding its 2025 Sustainability Goal aligned with power from renewable sources.
Jack Broodo, President of Dow's Materials and Energy business unit, stated: "Dow's passion for being the world's most sustainable materials science company includes making efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. As one of the leading clean energy buyers in the chemical industry and among the top 20 clean energy buyers globally, we continuously seek opportunities to transition our facilities to cleaner, more cost-effective power while ensuring reliable operations.
These agreements will keep Dow competitive now and in the future as we continue to deliver products and innovations with zero carbon emissions to the environment."
The RPAs include:
• Six agreements in Europe enabled eight Dow facilities in Spain, the United Kingdom, Sweden, France and Germany to transition to 100 percent green electricity.
Many other Dow facilities in Europe have also transitioned to a cleaner grid power mix or import renewable energy to supplement the on-site generation required to ensure reliable operations.
• In Latin America, Dow signed a long-term agreement with Casa dos Ventos in Brazil for the construction of a new wind energy facility in Rio Grande do Norte state. The agreement provides Dow's facility in Cabangu, Brazil, with cost-competitive capacity for wind-generated electricity and 60 MW of continuous renewable energy assurance to supply power for silicon metal production.
• In North America, a long-term agreement with Capital Power Corporation in Alberta, Canada, will provide clean energy capacity and replace approximately 40 percent of the energy demand at Dow's polyethylene production facility in Prentiss, Alberta. The RPA with Capital Power, delivered through its Whitla 2 wind farm project, supports grid diversity and provides greater access to renewable energy for both industry and consumers in Alberta.
These agreements build on four RPAs signed by Dow in 2020 that provided access to additional solar and wind capacity to reduce Dow's Scope 2 emissions by 225,000 metric tons of CO2e.
Also in 2020, Dow announced its commitment to reduce net annual carbon emissions by an additional 15 percent on the path to net CO2 neutrality by 2050, and to reduce net annual carbon emissions by approximately 30 percent by 2030 (since 2005).
In line with this target, the company continues to transition more of its facilities and operations to cleaner power. Last year, Dow obtained approximately 25 percent of its purchased electricity consumption from renewable sources.
