Sakıp Sabancı Museum's conference series titled "Turkish Painting Conversations at SSM" is launching as part of the exhibition "Turkish Painting in the Path of Modernism." The conferences, to be held free of charge at 16:00 between 25 May - 13 June, will focus on intergenerational interactions and moments of change during different periods of Turkish art history. The conference series, which will address chronologically the modernization process extending from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic, will begin on Thursday, 25 May with Prof. Dr. Zeynep İnankur's lecture titled "A Multi-Faceted Identity: Museum Director, Archaeologist, Educator and Painter Osman Hamdi Bey." The conference will cover Osman Hamdi Bey's life story as well as the paintings he produced for the Western art market, their subjects and techniques. Dr. Özlem İnay Erten's conference titled "On the Paintings, Collecting, Photography and Art Writing of Hüseyin Zekâî Pasha" will take place on Tuesday, 30 May. The discussion will address not only the paintings of Hüseyin Zekâî Pasha, a strong representative of the Military Painters generation, which held an important place in the development of canvas painting in the Western sense in Turkey, particularly known for his still life and landscape works; but also his work in various fields such as archival work, documentation, photography, museum curation, collecting, painting instruction and art criticism. The "Turkish Painting Conversations at SSM" series will host Dr. Assistant Professor Ali Kayaalp on Thursday, 1 June. The conference titled "The Dawn of Ottoman Painting: Military Painters" will focus on Ottoman modernization, which developed largely under conditions required by militarization; drawing lessons that began to be taught in military schools for practical reasons; and the emergence of a generation of painters who began to take an interest in painting as an artistic form; and how 19th-century Ottoman military painters opened the way for succeeding generations of artists, particularly the painters of the Çallı Generation. Dr. Ayşenur İlkan's lecture titled "Bohemian Painter, Legendary Teacher, Extraordinary Personality: İbrahim Çallı" will be held online on Tuesday, 6 June. The discussion will examine in detail the life, formative conditions, works, teaching and place within his generation of İbrahim Çallı, who was among the most renowned painters of his time, left his mark on the history of the Fine Arts Academy as painter and educator, and stood out within his generation through his bohemian personality. The "Turkish Painting Conversations at SSM" will conclude on Tuesday, 13 June with Dr. Bahadır Sürelli's lecture titled "Süleyman Seyyid and Fenn-i Menâzır." The discussion will address the work Fenn-i Menâzir on perspective written by Ottoman painter Süleyman Seyyid, who taught students for more than forty years, mostly at the War School, and whom we know primarily through his still life works.
