SALT Draws Attention to Climate Change
SALT's exhibition program Is This Our Last Chance?, which aims to draw attention to the effects of climate change on humans and the world, brings together ten documentaries from South Africa, Norway, France, Canada, Bolivia and the Balkans in its 2021 selection. Held in its seventh year with support from Garanti BBVA, the program continues with the 2019 production Mossville: When Great Trees Fall on 10-16 May at saltonline.org.

Mossville: When Great Trees Fall (2019) still ©Fire River Films[/caption] Alexander Glustrom's documentary Mossville: When Great Trees Fall follows Stacey Ryan, a lifelong Mossville resident and mechanic, and her struggle against environmental injustice and racism. As Stacey contends with health problems caused by toxic chemicals emitted from the facilities, her electricity, water and sewage services are cut off. As the petrochemical company pursues buying the homes of Mossville residents, Stacey and other townspeople are forced to choose between continuing to live in a chemical war zone and abandoning land their families have owned for generations. Mossville, Louisiana, has been a safe haven providing economic opportunity for generations of African American families since its founding by freed slaves. Yet today, the town surrounded by 14 petrochemical facilities has suffered severely from the construction of these massive plants and ranks among the top in the United States for air pollution. Plans by Sasol, a chemical company established in South Africa during apartheid, to expand its current industrial facility force the town's residents either to leave their homes or to endure increasing air pollution.
