Protein is essential for body structure. It is found in the composition of muscles, tissues, internal organs, blood cells, defense mechanisms, hair, nails and skin cells. Liv Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Alev Özsarı provided important information about the signs indicating protein deficiency in the body.

What Are the Symptoms of Protein Deficiency?

Protein deficiency disrupts the chemical and physical balance of plasma, leading to significant symptoms in the organism.
  • Edema: Fluid accumulation under the skin, most commonly affecting the legs, feet and ankles. However, it can occur at any location on the body.
  • Immune system is affected: Frequent illness and allergies are observed. These may be signs of protein deficiency, as protein is one of the cornerstones of the body's defense mechanism.
  • Severe muscle loss - weight loss: Disproportionate body composition develops, with a distended abdomen while arms and legs become thin.
  • Fragile or thinning hair: Hair loss and thinning are frequently observed.
  • Deep ridges form around feet and nails, with protrusions or parallel white lines appearing on fingers and toenails.
  • Pale skin: Loss of pigmentation and skin that burns easily in the sun is observed.
  • Skin rashes: Rashes develop on the skin as it becomes dry and flaky.
  • Slow-healing or non-healing stubborn wounds: Pressure ulcers (bedsores) and skin ulcers become difficult to heal. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and play an important role in wound healing.
  • Growth and development disorders: Affects growth and development in children.
  • Sleep problems: Difficulty sleeping and anxiety are observed.
  • Persistent headaches and fatigue occur.

Pay Attention to Protein Deficiency

  • Diet should include meat, eggs and legumes with high protein content. Eating excessive amounts of meat does not indicate adequate protein intake.
  • Care should be taken to consume quality protein. The best protein sources are chicken, rabbit, turkey and eggs.
  • Fat reduces protein absorption. High-fat protein sources should be avoided. Steaming and baking are the most recommended meat cooking methods.
  • If protein deficiency cannot be remedied through food, protein supplements or intravenous supplementation in hospital may be used.
  • Those engaging in intense exercise must ensure adequate protein intake. However, excess of anything is harmful, and this should not be forgotten.
