Life is a continuous process of change, transformation and translation. Since Heraclitus, we have known that one cannot step twice into the same river. Ancient Greek philosophy was divided into two around fire and water. Fire was transformation. Water was the change brought by time. But at their core, both were defined by differentiation; the change of matter. Changing matter and time are connected to memory. Every change reminds us once again of the reality of memory and repairs it. Memory is not continuous. It records its stages. Just as culture is composed of layers. In Sudarshan Shetty's works, matter, time and memory are addressed together. Their cultural frameworks and compositions are indicated. Breaking is a difficult process. It fragments matter and distances it from itself. Repair, on the other hand, is clinging to time and matter. Yet every repair bears the mark of time. Shetty seeks the mark of time in the reality of cultures. The fusion of two different materials is the reconciliation of two different realities and cultures. Culture is human. Even if it creates itself, the world is ours, it becomes fixed through our perception and understanding. Then change is my change. Either everything is moving away from me or reaching toward me. Shetty, along with all that change, makes a reference to the universal existential tragedy of mankind. He implies the search for paths of man caught between time, culture and matter. On the line extending from ancient Greece to today, the hidden changed and unchanged in Shetty's work.
