Melon is one of the most beloved fruits during summer months for its taste and pleasant aroma. These characteristics make it indispensable on summer tables, but with many varieties available, melon is also highly beneficial for different body systems. Eye health protection, weight loss, increased fertility to strengthening the immune system—it has many functions. Dyt. Aslıhan Altuntaş from the Nutrition and Diet Department at Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital shared important information about the benefits of melon and the correct ways to consume it.

A Complete Fiber Source

Melon is a low-calorie and highly fibrous food. One serving of melon, 150 grams, contains 1.5 grams of fiber. This fruit with high fiber content helps the intestines function properly. Melon can be easily consumed at breakfast. Because of its fiber content, melon consumed at breakfast provides long-lasting satiety.

Beta-Carotene Content Protects Eye Health

Many yellow and orange fruits are rich in beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is a compound that can be easily converted to vitamin A. In other words, beta-carotene is considered a form of vitamin A in itself. Melon is also a fruit full of beta-carotene. This has positive effects on eye health. Some research has shown that beta-carotene can prevent cataract formation. Additionally, the beta-carotene in melon is very beneficial for strong immunity and overall health maintenance.

Folate Provides a Healthy Pregnancy Period

Melon stands out as a folate reservoir, containing rich amounts of vitamins A, B and C along with sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, copper and alpha-beta carotenes. Folate is given to those who wish to become pregnant and to expectant mothers for a healthy pregnancy period. According to research, regular melon consumption also helps increase fertility. Melon also ensures a healthy pregnancy period and the healthy birth of the baby. Additionally, melon has hormone-balancing properties.

The "Healthy Carbohydrate" in Melon

As with any food, melon consumption should not be excessive. Melon should be consumed at one serving per day, which is 150 grams. Melon is particularly a fruit that athletes and those exercising can eat with peace of mind before exercise. There is a perception among those who exercise that they should eat only protein-rich and carbohydrate-poor foods. Because of this perception, athletes become deficient in vitamins and minerals. However, the carbohydrate in melon is a healthy carbohydrate, which is why it is a food that athletes should eat. However, diabetic patients should not consume this fruit without consulting their physician.

Melon Beverage Recipe

Beverages prepared with melon are both refreshing and can make a good meal. Here is a recipe for one of the melon-based beverages you can easily prepare at home:
  • 200 grams black grapes
  • 3 slices banana
  • 1 serving melon
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla ice cream
  • 1 tea glass milk
