On 28 October, world diving record holder Şahika Ercümen surpassed the 90-metre mark in the no-fins category during a dive in the Gilindire Cave in Mersin, dedicated to Republic Day, thus breaking the women's world record. In water surrounded by remnants from the glacial period, the national athlete exceeded the 100-metre mark on a single breath without fins, becoming the new world record holder at the 90-metre threshold. Ercümen qualified for entry into the Guinness World Records book. Şahika Ercümen, rather than viewing the asthma she suffered in childhood as an obstacle, has demonstrated the determination to cope with it, and continues to inspire others battling asthma through the records she has broken. "Life for me did not begin when I took my first breath, but when I held it," said Şahika Ercümen, continuing: "Asthma is truly such a debilitating condition that in the past, let alone pursuing sports, it could keep me confined indoors. At age 12, during a school trip to a sailing club in Çanakkale, I became interested in underwater club sports. Later, I pursued this sport, which I had long desired. My relationship with water became my greatest support in battling asthma. As a result, today I can hold my breath for six minutes. Perhaps if I had not been asthmatic, I might not be an athlete who has broken even more world records by now. Despite all difficulties, when you truly desire something, when you believe in it to the end, and when you work for it with all your strength and heart, no difficulty can stand in your way," she said.
