Acıbadem Kozyatağı Hastanesi Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Ayşe Sena Binöz stated: "When the body's iron stores decline, sufficient normal red blood cells cannot be produced to carry oxygen, and iron deficiency anemia can develop. Iron deficiency, which manifests with symptoms such as fatigue, inattention, pallor of the skin, quick exhaustion, dizziness, loss of appetite and sensitivity to cold, can be addressed through iron-rich foods. Foods high in iron content help support blood production and aid in addressing anemia." Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Ayşe Sena Binöz disclosed 10 iron-rich foods and provided important recommendations.

Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds, which help meet iron requirements, contain 9 mg of iron per 100 grams. Being a nutrient rich in vitamins B and E, potassium, magnesium and zinc, pumpkin seeds can be added to salads, mixed into yogurt, or consumed as a snack alongside other iron-rich dried fruits. However, due to their high energy density, consuming one handful (10 grams) per day is sufficient.

Red meat

Red meat containing 2.7 mg of iron per 100 grams covers approximately 15 percent of the daily required iron intake. For this reason, it is quite important for individuals with potential anemia tendency. However, due to its high cholesterol content, those with a history of chronic disease should be mindful of measured consumption. The American Institute for Cancer Research warns against consuming more than 350-500 grams of red meat per week.

Dried fruits

Dried fruits, which are protective against anemia with their iron content and strengthen the immune system with their high antioxidant content, should be consumed in moderation due to their dense calorie content and rapid elevation of blood sugar. By adding 2 whole walnuts or 6 hazelnuts to one portion of dried fruit consumed as a snack (1 tablespoon of dried raisins, 3-4 dried apricots/plums, 1 dried fig, etc.), you can maintain blood sugar balance and support your daily iron needs. Compared to other dried fruits, seeded dried raisins have higher iron content. However, diabetic patients should be cautious. Since dried fruits sold openly can cause harm rather than benefit due to uncontrolled storage conditions, you can prefer packaged products without added sugar.

Eggs

Eggs, which can be considered the highest quality protein after breast milk, can prevent anemia risk thanks to their rich iron content and strengthen the immune system to provide protection against disease. Do not neglect consuming one egg per day. Enriching eggs with foods rich in vitamin C such as arugula, parsley, watercress and citrus fruits increases the iron content within them.

Legumes

Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Ayşe Sena Binöz states: "Legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, dried beans, black-eyed peas and red kidney beans are protective against anemia with their high iron content. They are also important for the increased protein and iron requirements during breastfeeding and pregnancy periods. By consuming plenty of greens with lemon alongside legumes, you can increase iron absorption. However, it should not be overlooked that improperly cooked legumes will negatively affect iron absorption."

Liver

Liver, the most important source of iron, stands out with its blood-building properties. However, those with iron deficiency anemia should consume organ meats like liver under specialist supervision due to their high cholesterol levels.

Poultry

For those who do not consume red meat, poultry consumption provides important benefit in meeting iron requirements. You can make poultry healthier by preparing it skinless using grilling or boiling methods. At the same time, to increase iron availability in the body, you can accompany your poultry choice with salads sweetened with molasses and lemon, garnished with pumpkin seeds, making your meal an iron depot.

Spinach

Spinach, an important winter vegetable, is a good source of iron. However, the oxalic acid content, a polyphenolic molecule naturally present in spinach, binds iron and negatively affects body absorption. In this case, you can consume spinach cooked rather than raw and increase iron absorption in the body by adding vitamin C while consuming it. When cooking spinach, be careful not to overcook to prevent vitamin and mineral loss as much as possible. At the same time, gout patients should be cautious due to its high purine content.

Molasses

Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Ayşe Sena Binöz states: "Molasses is an easy and nutritious energy source alternative with iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. With its iron content, it acts as a supplement for those with anemia problems. 20 grams of molasses contains 2 mg of iron. It can be used as a sweetener alternative in infant and child nutrition where iron requirements are high. However, because it rapidly elevates blood sugar, portion control should be observed; when purchasing, care should be taken to read labels to ensure it does not contain glucose-fructose syrup."

Tahini

Tahini, obtained from sesame seeds, also increases body resistance with its iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper and selenium content. Its fat profile consists of unsaturated fatty acids that have a protective effect on heart health. Due to its high energy content, it should be chosen with portion control. One to two teaspoons daily of the tahini-molasses combination emerges as a strong alternative for meeting daily iron requirements, particularly for individuals who do not consume meat and for nursing mothers.
