Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Pera Museum Film and Video Programs (Pera Film), in collaboration with Altyazı Cinema Journal, continues to present the "Cinéma Vérité: The Truth of the Camera" selection to cinema enthusiasts. The program, bringing together examples of "Cinéma Vérité" from the United States, France, Canada, Mexico and Chile, will host a discussion with documentary filmmaker and academic Can Candan following the screening of Beautiful May on Saturday, 6 January. In the discussion moderated by curator Aslı Ildır, the differences between the "Cinéma Vérité" (Cinema Truth) movement that emerged in France in the early 1960s and the North American-based "Direct Cinema" will be explored from historical and theoretical perspectives.
A documentary capturing the pulse of Paris streets
Shot on the streets of Paris in spring 1962, shortly after the Algerian War, Beautiful May comprises a series of street interviews with residents. The documentary, which received awards from DOK Leipzig and the Venice Film Festival, examines public attitudes toward the social and political issues of the period. Directed by Chris Marker and Pierre Lhomme, Beautiful May brings together prominent figures of French cinema Yves Montand, Simone Signoret and Jean-Luc Godard. The "Cinéma Vérité: The Truth of the Camera" film program will continue at Pera Museum Auditorium through 10 January.
