'Aphrodisias-Ara Güler' Opens on 30 September

Ara Güler Museum's first exhibition in Ankara, 'Aphrodisias-Ara Güler', opens on 30 September at Erimtan Archaeology and Art Museum, under the main sponsorship of the T.R. Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Volkswagen. Ara Güler Museum and Ara Güler Archive and Research Center, brought to life through collaboration between Doğuş Group and Ara Güler, continue to bring Ara Güler's photographs to all corners of Turkey. The core of the exhibition consists of photographs taken by Ara Güler at different times in Geyre Village and its surroundings, which he visited whenever possible from 1958, when he happened to go to Geyre Village, until the early 1990s. Today, this area is registered as the Aphrodisias Archaeological Site and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The exhibition also features Ara Güler's original darkroom prints of Aphrodisias, international periodicals and agency correspondence regarding the photographs, along with clues, notes and book proofs related to the preparation process of Ara Güler's book titled 'Aphrodisias's Cry', together with prints of these publications. The 'Aphrodisias-Ara Güler' exhibition can be visited at Erimtan Archaeology and Art Museum every day except Mondays from 10:00-18:00 between 30 September 2022 and 28 February 2023.   Ara Güler Museum was established as a result of collaboration between Doğuş Group and Ara Güler, one of the pioneers of photojournalism and photographic art in Turkey. The museum opened at Bomontiada on 16 August 2018, Ara Güler's 90th birthday, with his participation. Ara Güler Museum aims to bring together Ara Güler's multifaceted artist identity, inspiring life and valuable archive with a broad audience. Through domestic and international exhibitions, publications, events and collaborations, it seeks to highlight and disseminate the visual, emotional and social impact of photographic art. Plans are in place to make Güler Apartment in Beyoğlu, Galatasaray, where Ara Güler preserved his archive throughout his life, the permanent museum address.     Ara Güler Archive and Research Center (AGAVAM) The Ara Güler Archive and Research Center, established in 2016 through collaboration between Doğuş Group and Ara Güler, aims to preserve the archive created by Ara Güler throughout his life, remaining faithful to its original structure, and to pass it on to future generations. Ara Güler Archive and Research Center (AGAVAM) began archive preservation work in 2017 at Güler Apartment in Galatasaray, which had long housed the archive of Ara Güler, one of the most important documentarians of his century. Subsequently, the center established at Bomontiada was designed in accordance with contemporary museum and archival standards, taking into account the needs of the Ara Güler archive.
