"Winter months are difficult times for patients with chronic kidney failure or those who have undergone kidney transplants. The common cold viruses that appear frequently during these months can sometimes lead to serious problems," warns Prof. Dr. Alp Gürkan.

Cold weather causes the body to direct less blood to the arms and legs in order to preserve body heat in the trunk and head. This reduction in blood flow means fewer white blood cells reach those areas to fight disease. Winter months are particularly challenging for patients with chronic kidney failure or those who have undergone kidney transplants.

Kidney Patients Should Not Neglect the Flu Vaccine

The common cold viruses frequently seen during these months can sometimes lead to serious complications. Patients with borderline kidney function who contract such an infection may suffer temporary or permanent kidney damage. For this reason, we strongly recommend the flu vaccine for patients who have undergone kidney transplants or have borderline kidney function.

Do Not Use Antibiotics or Fever-Reducing Medications Without Proper Medical Guidance

If a common cold is accompanied by high fever, these individuals must also pay attention to the amount of fluid they consume. During febrile episodes, they will lose fluid through perspiration, and with reduced appetite and thirst sensation, patients risk becoming dehydrated and facing a worsening of kidney failure. It is inadvisable for people with kidney failure or those who have undergone kidney transplants to indiscriminately use antibiotics or fever-reducing medications for every cold or fever. They must always consult a physician for blood tests and, if necessary, culture tests to identify any microorganisms causing the illness. It should not be forgotten that one of the causes of kidney failure is recurrent infections and improper or inadequate treatment of these infections.

Keep Your Nose Warm!

A cold nose creates more opportunity for rhinoviruses to multiply; covering the nose with a scarf or wool muffler to keep it warm is an effective way to reduce the risk of catching a cold.

Be Alert if Your Child Frequently Gets Urinary Tract Infections!

A situation that requires special attention during winter months, particularly for girls, is urinary tract infections. Unfortunately, in our country, recurrent urinary tract infections are a significant cause of kidney failure in the pediatric age group. In this case, pathologies that could lead to urinary tract infections, such as urine reflux, should be investigated.

Live Healthily!

Rest, regular sleep, and nutrition are important in reducing these winter-related problems. Sleep seven to nine hours per night. Sleeping less than seven hours or more than nine hours can have adverse effects on cardiovascular health and blood pressure. Quality sleep is important for reducing stress and maintaining energy levels throughout the day. Caffeine, artificial light, or intense physical activity close to bedtime can prevent quality sleep. Prioritize your sleep as much as you prioritize your diet! Another problem brought by winter months is physical inactivity. Especially people who have undergone kidney transplants should take proper precautions and continue at least their daily walks. Physical inactivity will weaken muscles and lead to unnecessary weight gain. If it is not possible to go outside, even at home, at least half an hour of light exercise daily is sufficient.

Pay Attention to Hand Hygiene!

Regular hand washing is a simple way to combat seasonal illnesses. Keep hand sanitizer in your car or bag, and avoid touching common pens or doorknobs as much as possible. It will be beneficial for people who have undergone kidney transplants to avoid spending time in crowded places during these winter months and to wash their hands frequently.

Don't Forget to Drink Water

During winter months, there is also a reduced sensation of thirst. For this reason, it is essential to ensure adequate fluid intake. For patients with borderline kidney function, consuming sufficient fluid should not be understood as drinking large amounts of water. Excessive fluid consumption can also be harmful to these patients. Excessive water consumption can lead to water intoxication. This can result in serious conditions leading to brain and lung edema.

Spend Time with Friends!

The best way to boost immunity is to spend time with friends. Socializing has been shown to help strengthen the immune system. Stress, on the other hand, can worsen illness and reduce sleep, further lowering your immune response.
