AKPA Kimya, established in Tekirdağ in 1997 with 100% domestic capital to meet the strategic raw material needs of the country's chemical sector, announced the release of its 2023 sustainability report. As AKPA Kimya advances steadily on its sustainability journey, it continues to contribute to society and the environment.
The report details significant achievements accomplished in 2023 towards AKPA Kimya's predetermined sustainability targets and highlights the company's strong commitment to its sustainability strategy, employees, operations and purpose-driven investments in its product portfolio. Key highlights from the report include:
- AKPA, which targets sourcing all of its energy from renewable resources by 2035, completed its 1 MW solar power project in 2023 and brought it into full operation. This system generated approximately 1,154 MWh of energy.
- AKPA currently sources 21% of its electricity consumption at its Muratlı facility from renewable resources. The report indicates that AKPA Kimya has begun project work to increase this ratio to 25% through wind turbines.
- AKPA, which has adopted a circular economy model in waste management, focuses primarily on reducing waste at source, recovering it as raw material or reusing it. In 2023, AKPA Kimya achieved a 71% rate in recovering packaging waste generated from raw material use and returning it to the economy.
- AKPA Kimya earned ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System Certification in 2023 through energy efficiency practices in production and management operations.
- After two years of intensive R&D work, AKPA succeeded in designing a specialized wastewater treatment system and achieved increased capacity with the new system. Additionally, improvements in wastewater treatment performance were achieved through newly installed sludge dewatering equipment and a biological treatment unit system. Due to the rapid analysis required for operating the new treatment facility, a new operations building was established that includes an Environmental Laboratory and a SCADA control room for online monitoring. As a result of these efforts, AKPA Kimya increased the capacity of its wastewater treatment facility from 500 m³/day to 2,000 m³/day starting May 2023.
- Calculating the corporate carbon footprint resulting from products, services and operations is among AKPA Kimya's targets for 2024.
By prioritizing digitalization and automation in production processes and increasing operational efficiency through advanced technologies like SAP S/4HANA while rapidly pursuing carbon emission reduction projects, AKPA is simultaneously taking responsibility in combating climate change and focusing on managing risks that threaten sustainability. In 2023, as AKPA Kimya strengthened its environment-focused production approach, Board Chairman Kemal Darcan stated: "In another R&D project that we began work on in 2023 and aim to realize in 2024, we focused on producing more environmentally friendly packaging materials. This project is not only an environmentally friendly product but also carries the challenging goal of domesticating raw materials. In addition to reducing our country's import dependency, through our strong R&D center and innovative, quality production, we are working with all our might on our sustainability journey to play an active role in our customers' sectors' transformation based on sustainability."
