New Adhesive for Paper Straws Introduced in India
New Adhesive for Paper Straws in India
H.B. Fuller India has announced a new food-safe adhesive under its leading Swift®tak brand to meet growing demand for paper straws. Paper straws have presented a real challenge for both the industry and consumers, but the company's latest launch offers distinct advantages in terms of sustainability, safety and production efficiency.
H.B. Fuller views food safety as critical and key to sustaining life and improving health. As more consumers adopt an "anti-single-use plastic" mindset and governments respond with a sense of urgency, paper straws are becoming an increasingly important alternative. As a result, the team in India has launched Swift®tak PS5600-I, a food-safe adhesive for the paper straw market.
Local H.B. Fuller scientists provide advanced food-safe solutions with new water-based technology that creates durable paper straws that maintain straw integrity while a consumer enjoys a beverage and can withstand three hours in a wide variety of liquids including water, fruit juices, soft drinks and milk. Straws made with Swift®tak adhesives comply with FDA regulation 176.170.
MEA General Manager Harsh Gupta states: "Whether you are starting your investment in paper straws, expanding your portfolio from plastic to paper, or upgrading your technology to be water-resistant, choosing the right adhesive is the key to creating a safe, long-lasting paper straw that maintains its integrity during use and helps reduce your environmental footprint. Our new Swift®tak PS5600-I product is truly at the forefront of innovation, with no plasticizers and offering more than three hours of liquid resistance and higher operational efficiency."
The company has advanced the adhesive class for very fast-moving paper straw machines, taking production to a new level of efficiency and product quality. Swift®tak supports fast-setting products that are easier to use and cleaner, and cause less wear and tear on machines. Therefore, this straw solution enables manufacturers to focus more on product quality and output and less on operational concerns.
Additionally, as beverage brands, restaurants and companies transition from plastic to paper straws, it is important that they offer straws that are liquid-resistant, compatible and food-safe for a more sustainable future.
Leveraging its laboratory near Shirwal in Pune, H.B. Fuller's R&D team worked closely with expert paper and equipment manufacturers to customize the formulation for high-speed paper straw production and to address specific applications and equipment. Having this India-based capability and technical expertise allows the global company to provide confidence in product performance, enabling manufacturers to test the adhesive with paper samples before running it on paper straw lines without stopping regular production to trial a new material.
"The industry is steadily moving toward more environmentally friendly processes and components. Adhesives, small but central actors in the shift toward circularity and sustainability, are now helping manufacturers address major concerns about plastic, and the paper straw market should continue to grow in popularity and use," says Gupta.
