Henkel Achieves Carbon-Neutral Production at GEBKİM Facility

Henkel has brought its GEBKİM Adhesive Technologies Factory in Kocaeli to carbon-neutral production levels. Together with the Istanbul Tuzla Adhesive Technologies Factory, which previously achieved carbon-neutral production, all of the company's Adhesive Technologies manufacturing facilities in Turkey now operate as carbon-neutral. This step stands out as one of the important milestones Henkel is taking in line with its net-zero emissions target by 2045.

Fossil fuel use eliminated
Henkel implemented a significant electrification project at the GEBKİM facility by replacing the boiler system running on natural gas with a high-efficiency electric boiler system. Through this transformation, direct fossil fuel use at the facility was completely eliminated, Scope 1 emissions were zeroed out, and an annual CO₂ equivalent emission reduction of approximately 956 tons was achieved.

100 percent renewable electricity in use
By combining solar energy generated at the facility with International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC), the transition to 100 percent renewable electricity consumption was completed. In this way, Scope 2 emissions were also zeroed while, through increased energy efficiency, manufacturing capacity was preserved and total energy consumption was aimed to be reduced. With this implementation, GEBKİM Factory joined Henkel's global pioneering facilities that have achieved fossil fuel-free production.

Contributing to global sustainability targets
Simon Ulmann, Vice President responsible for Adhesive Technologies IMEA Region Operations and Supply Chain at Henkel, stated that achieving carbon-neutral production at the GEBKİM Factory in Turkey and the Kurkumbh facilities in India represents an important milestone in the company's global sustainability strategy.

Ulmann expressed that they aim to systematically eliminate fossil fuel use in operations and replace it with electric processes powered by renewable energy, adding that the results achieved are accelerating the transition to net-zero operations.

Significant milestone in Turkey operations
Mehmet Yılmaz, President of Turkish Henkel Adhesive Technologies and Operations Director for the Middle East and Africa Region, stated that the GEBKİM Factory's transition to carbon-neutral production represents an important turning point in terms of the company's sustainable manufacturing vision.

Yılmaz noted that the investment realized contributes not only to reducing environmental impact but also to making manufacturing processes more efficient and sustainable.
