Different Types of Adhesives for Crafts

White Craft Glue

This is the most common craft glue for porous, lightweight materials such as paper, cardboard, fabric and children's crafts. It is water-based; this means easy cleanup and low toxicity. It should be noted that the adhesive must dry and the project must be frequently clamped until the adhesive is completely dry before strength becomes important. This also means that white glue should not be used in applications requiring water resistance. White glue dries clear and is somewhat flexible. For creative purposes and decorative effects, fillers such as fine glitter, pigment or water-based food coloring can be added. Approximately 1 hour set time, with final cure in 24 hours.

Yellow Wood Glue

Yellow wood glue is also water-based and is made from the same vinyl acetate polymers as white glue. It is designed to work with wood and is immediately tacky for better grip in uncured state. It is also generally harder, so it is easier to sand. Some wood glues can also be white and dry, so labels must be read carefully. Again, wood shavings or other powder fillers can be added for special effects. Wood adhesives set in less than ~1 hour. However, it can take up to 24 hours to reach full strength. Three types of wood adhesive are available: • Type-I exhibits some water resistance properties. • Type-II will perform better in outdoor conditions. These adhesives generally have a longer open time and can bond at lower temperatures. Both Type I and II can be used for outdoor applications such as outdoor furniture and flooring. • Type-III is not water resistant and is designed for indoor use only. Type-III is good for interior woodwork and flooring projects. Marine glue is required for use with water.

Super Glue (also known as cyanoacrylate adhesives):

Cyanoacrylate adhesives bond very quickly and to a variety of surfaces. They create a very strong bond and dry clear. The surfaces to be bonded should fit well together to achieve good adhesion. Super glue can be purchased in various viscosities providing some flexibility in gap-filling performance. However, super glues can be finicky about surface contact and coverage - too much or too little can affect the bond. In general, super glues are not good for foam plastic unless stated on the label. Cyanoacrylates give the best results in tensile applications with low impact resistance requirements. While uncured, a cloth with acetone solvent can be used for cleaning. However, once cured, solvents can no longer dissolve the adhesive. Cyanoacrylates work particularly well for balsa wood projects. Woodworkers often use two-part cyanoacrylates to quickly glue wood veneers. Cyanoacrylates set between seconds and minutes depending on the formulation. Dries clear and is waterproof.

Conclusion:

Cyanoacrylates are suitable for projects such as wood, metal, ceramic, leather, glass and some plastics where the bond line is very tight.

Hot Glue

Melting and cooling of polymers provide application and adhesion methods for hot melt adhesives. Hot glue is most commonly applied using a glue gun and is offered with low (250°F) and high (380°F) melting options. Many types and performance exist depending on polymer type. Hot glue can be used on both porous and non-porous surfaces. Due to its high viscosity, it can bond uneven surfaces to each other and is great at filling gaps. Hot glue is typically not used in high-strength applications. And it cannot survive at high temperatures close to the application temperature. However, it offers a very fast setting option for various crafts and surfaces. Great multipurpose adhesive for quick setup and application, but not for use by children. With hot glue, you can trace patterns to create bead designs on surfaces for texture and paint over them for 3D surface effects. Hot glue is often used to add flower or ribbon embellishments to wreaths, hair ribbons and picture frames where hardness and durability are not important.

Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives (PSA)

PSAs are available in sheets and dots and can be used in numerous craft projects involving substrates such as lightweight paper, plastic, metal and glass.

Spray Adhesives

Spray adhesive is a solvent-based contact adhesive applied by spray. When using spray adhesive, it is important to apply it in a well-ventilated room. After spraying your project, allow the solvent to completely evaporate before bonding together immediately. Once bonded, you cannot reposition your substrates. Spray adhesives can be used with paper, foam board, fabric, photos and felt. Special contact adhesives are also available in containers that can be applied by roller or brush for larger, more demanding projects involving wood, metal and plastic sheet laminates. Spray adhesives are a perfect choice for gluing photos or fabrics to the back of foam board.

Fabric Adhesives

Fabric adhesives can be liquid white adhesives such as polyvinyl acetate (PVA) types. Various products cover light to heavy fabric bonding, so it is important to get the right product for your project's weight or covering. Some versions are safe for washing and dry cleaning, but it is important to read the adhesive label first. For fabric and leather projects and garment making, there are expanded non-woven tapes and fusible adhesives in rolled good form ranging from highly flexible to stiff. These can be found in sewing and fabric stores and can be permanently bonded without seeping for a very durable craft. Fabric adhesives can be used to secure a fraying edge and for do-it-yourself projects such as making hair ribbons or fabric/foam laminated computer cases.

Epoxy

Epoxies are typically two-part systems designed for high-performance adhesion. While epoxies can be formulated to accommodate many applications, they are generally hard, durable adhesives that successfully bond to many substrates in more demanding environments. Epoxy adhesives can exhibit a range of flexibility and clarity as well as curing speed. Epoxies have excellent gap-filling properties due to their high cohesive strength.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane adhesives bond various surfaces. They adhere to textile fibers, metals, plastics, glass, sand, ceramics, rubber and wood. Polyurethane is a multipurpose adhesive that comes with one-part and two-part options. Polyurethanes work well on many types of wood, especially on wood with high moisture content or oily wood where other adhesives may not be as successful. Clamping is required for several hours until strength builds. A very strong and firm full-strength bond is achieved within six to eight hours. Before fully cured, polyurethane adhesives can be removed using solvents such as mineral spirits or acetone. Dry glue can be sanded.

Glue Sticks

Glue sticks are great for children. They are low-tack adhesives but provide a permanent bond on various paper types including cardboard, foam board and poster board. Glue dries clear. Application examples include sealing envelopes, gluing labels, paper crafts, art projects.

Glue Tips for Crafts

1. Not all adhesives are created equal. There are many variations in each category and from one manufacturer to another. Labels should be read for information about toxicity, ventilation, recommended use and application, as well as durability in various environments. 2. Adhesive should be applied evenly and excess should be cleaned quickly. To preserve shelf life and performance, the adhesive container should be cleaned and closed immediately. 3. For optimum adhesive strength, surfaces must be free of residue and dust. It would be correct to clean the surfaces with a lint-free cloth dipped in isopropanol before gluing. The surfaces should be allowed to dry thoroughly before applying adhesive. 4. In crafts and repair projects requiring some durability, roughening the surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper to provide "teeth" for adhesives to bond to will yield very good results. If you cannot abrade the surface, wiping with isopropanol or acetone before applying adhesive can also be tried. This is especially useful for smooth, shiny surfaces that may be more difficult to glue. 5. You can first experiment with adhesive on leftover, discarded pieces of the project.
