Insulation Systems That Prevent Energy Loss

Insulation Systems That Prevent Energy Loss

Did you know that pipe insulation plays an important role in reducing energy costs? While insulation is commonly applied to external facades, insulating building installations also provides significant savings in energy spent on heating and cooling. IZODIR Chairman Emrullah Eruslu, commenting on the subject, stated that "pipe insulation is critical not only for its economic advantages but also from a sustainability perspective."

Pipe insulation refers to thermal, acoustic and fire insulation applied to pipes carrying fluids, valves, ventilation ducts, tanks, boilers, and other piping components, as well as mechanical rooms housing such components like boiler rooms. Pipe insulation plays a major role in saving energy spent on heating or cooling in industrial processes and buildings, and through reduced energy consumption, the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere also decreases. In this context, pipe insulation plays an important instrumental role in combating global warming and climate change.

Pipe insulation: an important step in the sustainability of industrial facilities

IZODIR—Heat, Water, Acoustic and Fire Insulation Contractors Association Management Board Chairman Emrullah Eruslu, highlighting that pipe insulation offers noteworthy contributions to sustainability as well as economic advantages, stated: "When examining the sectoral distribution of final energy consumption in our country, the industrial sector leads alongside buildings at 33 percent. The bulk of energy consumption in industry is used in process and space heating or cooling. Heat insulation applications to be carried out in industrial processes pay for themselves very quickly through the energy efficiency they provide. Furthermore, the European Green Deal encourages all industrial facilities wishing to remain competitive in the international trade arena to implement energy efficiency projects and reduce their carbon footprint. Therefore, pipe insulation applications to be carried out in industrial facilities stand out in terms of the energy efficiency and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions they provide, as well as sustainability. Pipe insulation applications to be implemented can reduce the energy burden in production costs and, by offering more competitive solutions in international markets, bring significant gains to financial sustainability. Through insulation applications, our transition to low-carbon and energy-efficient production, combined with our geographical proximity advantage, can also enable increased exports from our country to EU countries," he said.

Pipe insulation can minimize certain workplace accidents

IZODIR Chairman Emrullah Eruslu, noting that pipe insulation plays an effective role in protection against certain workplace accidents, continued his remarks as follows: "In industrial processes, piping components can carry various fluids at different temperatures such as hot or cold water, steam, hot oil, milk and others. On lines carrying hot water, steam or hot oil, surface temperatures are very high. Should workers unintentionally or accidentally come into contact with these piping components, pipe insulation must be applied and the surface brought to reasonable temperatures to protect against resulting workplace accidents—this is essential for worker health and safety. Furthermore, on lines carrying fluids at low temperatures, insulation can be applied to prevent condensation and corrosion from reducing the lifespan of the piping. At this point, insulation must definitely be applied to all piping components."

Emrullah Eruslu, noting that thermal, water, acoustic, piping and fire insulation, whether addressed individually or together, make important contributions to the lifespan of the building and its systems, concluded his remarks with the following words: "Our piping systems, like the blood vessels in our bodies, are distributed throughout all areas of buildings. In this way, all elements such as clean, conditioned air and heat necessary for our life and comfort are conveyed. In this context, insulation measures must be taken to prevent the harmful effects of noise and fire from spreading through the piping systems. If sound insulation is applied to piping together with thermal insulation in a building, noise in buildings is reduced and thus comfort is increased. Fire insulation applied in the most risky locations in the event of a fire, such as piping, ventilation ducts and electrical cable shafts, reduces loss of life and property significantly, enabling us to achieve safer buildings. We consider it important that pipe insulation in newly constructed buildings be given as much priority as other insulation applications and be accepted as an indispensable element of building construction. For energy-efficient, safe and comfortable structures, all insulation applications must be correctly applied with quality materials."
