Textile Sector Breaks Export Record in 2022
Textile and raw materials sector achieved its highest annual export on record in 2022, with exports totaling USD 10.359 billion.
According to data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), Turkey's exports in December 2022 reached USD 23 billion, representing a 3.1% increase compared to the same month of the previous year. This marked the highest December export figure on record.
Exports for January-December 2022 increased 12.9% year-on-year to USD 254.2 billion.
The textile and raw materials sector, which exported approximately USD 932 million in December 2021, recorded USD 798.6 million in exports in December 2022, a 14.3% decline.
For January-December 2022, the sector posted a 2.1% year-on-year increase, reaching USD 10.359 billion in exports. The textile and raw materials sector thus achieved its highest annual export on record.
Of the sector's December 2022 exports, USD 349 million was conducted from Istanbul. Istanbul was followed by Gaziantep with USD 125 million and Bursa with USD 104 million.
For January-December 2022, of the sector's USD 10.4 billion in exports, USD 4.322 billion originated from Istanbul, USD 1.7 billion from Gaziantep and USD 1.3 billion from Bursa.
Sector recorded highest exports to Italy
Italy was the leading export destination for the sector last month with USD 52 million. Italy was followed by Belarus with USD 50 million and the United States with USD 44 million. For January-December 2022, exports totaled USD 970 million to Italy, USD 548 million to the United States and USD 513 million to Belarus. By country groups for the sector's highest export destinations last month, EU countries ranked first with USD 275 million, the Commonwealth of Independent States ranked second with USD 145 million, and African countries ranked third with USD 98 million. In 2022, the sector exported USD 4.134 billion to EU countries, USD 1.6 billion to Commonwealth of Independent States countries and USD 1.3 billion to African countries. According to TİM data, the sector exported to 170 countries and regions in December 2022 and accounted for 3.5% of the country's total exports in the same period.
