Trial Production of Colored Cotton Completed

Agriculture and Forestry Minister Dr. Bekir Pakdemirli previously introduced two colored cotton varieties to the public, and a significant milestone has now been reached. The colored cottons registered by TAGEM—"Sarı Gelin" (light brown) and "Gelincik" (dark brown)—have also attracted considerable interest from the private sector.

Production to Be Expanded

Work has begun with a specialized private company involved in this field to enable the use of naturally colored cotton in the textile industry. Pilot production of these varieties was conducted in 2019 and proved successful. This year, production will proceed under a contract with the private company, and steps will be taken to expand this production. A decision has also been made to conduct joint research and development work with the company on increasing fiber yield, quality and color variety of colored cotton.

Strong Demand Expected in Children's Clothing

Since the cotton is naturally colored without the use of any chemicals, it has no negative health effects. Textile products made from colored cotton, which have no adverse environmental impact because no chemicals are used for coloring, are expected to see strong demand particularly in children's clothing.
