Strategic Steps Toward the Use of Hemp in Textiles

Strategic Initiatives on Hemp Use in Textiles Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) is taking steps and developing strategies to advance the evaluation of hemp sourced from Samsun and its surroundings in the textile sector. Under the guidance of OMÜ Hemp Research Institute, which developed and registered Turkey's first domestic and national hemp varieties "Vezir" and "Narlı," OMÜ is conducting intensive academic work for the industrialization of hemp in Samsun and its region and has been careful to establish an extensive communication network. The university hosted Uğur Balkuv, Chairman of the Board of Uğur Balkuv Triko, a company that works with many world-renowned brands in the textile sector, and company officials. In this context, Chairman Uğur Balkuv and his delegation visited the OMÜ Rectorate and met with Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Selim Aytaç, Director of OMÜ Hemp Research Institute. During the visit to the Rectorate, discussions centered on measures to expand the use of hemp, which is gaining increasing importance in Turkey's textile sector, and current developments in this area. At the meeting, Chairman Uğur Balkuv shared his views and experience on increasing hemp's share in the fashion sector, given its many environmentally friendly properties.
