Turkish Business and Science Professionals Develop Hydrogen-Fueled Ship

Turkish Business and Science Professionals Develop Hydrogen-Powered Vessel A green ship designed by Turkish business and science professionals will use hydrogen derived from seawater as fuel, eliminating its carbon footprint while being engineered to avoid harm to the marine ecosystem. CNA Group, which operates in the energy and maritime sectors, began the green ship project with Turkish scientists last year. Named "AYN Green," the vessel has been designed so that it will cause no environmental harm and will not deplete natural resources at any stage from construction to operation. AYN Green, planned as a general cargo ship, will convert seawater into hydrogen using wind energy while in transit. The converted hydrogen will be used as fuel aboard the ship. Waste from the ship, equipped with solar panels, will also be converted into electricity. Construction is set to begin shortly, with a cost of EUR 45 million, and the vessel is planned to be commissioned within 3 years.
Hakan Yağlı, Chairman of the Board of CNA Group, explained the vessel's features, stating that the company provides consulting services to ship owners and shipyards. He continued as follows:
"I became curious about certain aspects of these activities. With the thought of 'how do we get ahead of other nations, how do we be at the forefront in maritime,' we came together with our academics. We decided to move forward with implementing the project. After a preparation period of approximately one year, we have concluded the project phase." Yağlı noted that they have implemented the project with 26 highly respected professors in the fields of energy, hydrogen and maritime, and approximately 80 academic staff members. Pointing out that the ship is entirely environmentally friendly, he stated: "Today, most companies in the world say 'we are building green ships.' However, they are doing this by applying only certain aspects of the concept. Our 'AYN Green' presents the complete definition of green, and its construction will be based on this."  

Waste will be converted to electrical energy

Yağlı noted that the armor system on the ship will be made from a special polyurethane material, which will eliminate the use of toxic substances employed to protect ships from organisms such as algae and mussels. He also stated that waste from the ship will be converted.  
Yağlı said the following:
"Waste from personnel on the ship will be stored in a designated storage structure and burned in a closed-loop system to be converted into electrical energy. The ship itself will be manufactured in a 100 percent recyclable condition. While the ship eliminates its carbon footprint, it will also cause no harm to the marine ecosystem."  

Will be launched within 36 months

Commenting "This will be the first in the world, we will open and close an era in maritime history," Yağlı concluded his remarks as follows: "We are ready for construction. By the end of this month, the first phase of financing will be transferred to Turkey. After that, we will lay the ship on the ways. We are currently well above International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. We have already reached and surpassed the level that IMO aims to achieve by 2050. While our ship is under construction, we will move toward zero carbon, and our vessel will be launched within 36 months. We have already begun taking orders, and we are currently in discussions regarding orders, with interested parties from the United Kingdom, Germany, and France."   Source
