Wastewater Treatment and Reuse in Tekirdağ
A textile mill operating in Ergene district and Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University (NKÜ) Çorlu Engineering Faculty have jointly established a facility where wastewater is treated and made available for reuse.
Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer, Dean of NKÜ Çorlu Engineering Faculty, made remarks on the subject. Speaking with journalists in the factory yard where the facility is located, Tecer stated that they treat approximately 100 tons of wastewater daily and prepare it for reuse.
Tecer said: "This project has two objectives. The first and primary objective is to protect our natural resources and water resources and pass them on to future generations. The second is to recover water and make it available for industrial use in this region." Tecer also noted that they have been working on this system for a long time.
Reduced Oxygen Demand from Thousands to Below 50
Stating that they have reduced the oxygen demand from thousands to below 50 with this work, Tecer said: "Particularly in textile wastewater, we reduce the salinity that is highly conductive to below 10, which means water at drinking water quality. Additionally, the color problem in wastewater from dyehouses is one of the intractable problems in this region. With cold atmospheric plasma, we can reduce the color problem to nearly zero." He noted that groundwater reserves needed to be protected in this area, and surface waters needed to be returned to their natural state, which is why discharged wastewater needed to be treated and reused. "We have become a source of hope in this region, showing signs that the Ergene Basin and the streams that feed it can be rescued from their unfortunate fate. The treated water at this facility is reused in washing and dyeing operations at textile mills," Tecer said.Advertisement
