Solvay Wins People's Choice Award
Sustainable production of partially bio-based resin confirmed with 2023 PIA Re|Focus Sustainability Innovation Award.
Solvay announced that it won the 2023 People's Choice Award from the Plastics Industry Association (PIA) for Amodel® Bios polyphthalamide (PPA), a partially bio-based polymer, competing against all final nominees across all 2023 PIA Re|Focus Sustainability Innovation Award categories.
The award was presented to Solvay on 2 May at the Re|Focus Sustainability and Recycling Summit 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota (USA). The award recognizes the environmental benefits achieved through the material's sustainable production.
Brian Baleno, Vice President Automotive Marketing at Solvay, said: "We are extremely proud to receive this prestigious award that truly celebrates our efforts and initiatives to lead the focus on sustainability in our sector. It is wonderful to see an innovative solution that reduces environmental impact without compromising material performance being recognized."
Amodel® Bios PPA is a partially bio-based long-chain PPA made with non-food competing biomass. It is produced at Solvay's Augusta, Georgia manufacturing facility, which uses 100% renewable energy to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions.* Solvay
Thanks to this sustainable combination, the polymer has the lowest global warming potential (GWP) among all PPA resins worldwide. The facility further expanded its positive environmental performance profile by reducing water consumption and unsustainable industrial waste by 38% and 34%, respectively, compared to 2018.
Key properties of Amodel® Bios PPA include the highest glass transition temperature (Tg 135°C) among all bio-based PPA resins, very low moisture absorption, high elongation and weld-line strength, excellent dimensional stability and chemical resistance. The polymer is available in special structural, electrostatic-dissipative and flame-retardant grades.
It exhibits good colorability and flow, providing aesthetic surface quality when molded. Ideally suited for automotive and electronics applications, Amodel® Bios PPA is particularly suitable for e-mobility and electrical applications and helps manufacturers achieve ambitious carbon reduction targets including Scope 3.* Typical applications include surface-mounted devices, connectors, circuit breakers, switches and fluid connectors.
Amodel® is a registered trademark of Solvay.
* Under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) framework, Scope 1 refers to direct emissions from internal production processes, Scope 2 refers to indirect emissions from purchased energy, and Scope 3 refers to upstream and downstream emissions from all indirect sources such as material supply, packaging and transportation.
