PPG to Expand Coating Production Capacity in Europe for Packaging Applications
PPG announced it is expanding its coating production capacity in Europe for packaging applications. Investments at facilities in the Netherlands and Poland will support growing customer demand in the region for next-generation coatings for aluminum and steel containers used in the packaging of beverages, food and personal care products. Financial details regarding the expansions were not disclosed.
The projects include further expansion of PPG's site in Tiel, Netherlands, which will increase production capacity for PPG INNOVEL® BPA-free interior coatings for beverage cans by 30%. The project, expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022, follows a 50% expansion completed at the end of 2020. The Tiel facility will also double production capacity for PPG iSENSE® exterior coatings used on the exterior surface of metal cans for beverages and personal care packaging. This project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
PPG Innovel is the most widely used BPA-free interior beverage can spray technology in the world and provides neutral properties and compatibility for a wide range of filled products. PPG iSense specialty varnish coatings offer different sensory surface effects for can exteriors, including textured surfaces that help brands stand out on increasingly crowded store shelves.
PPG will also double capacity at its Cieszyn facility in Poland to support growth of PPG NUTRISHIELD™ BPA-free, interior, food can coatings. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2021.

These latest investments follow a project completed last year to expand packaging coatings capacity at PPG's Bodelshausen facility in Germany. Through this project, production capacity was doubled for white lacquers used on the exterior surface of personal care products and for caps and closures packaging. The on-site research and development (R&D) facility was also expanded and now represents PPG's European R&D packaging center of excellence. The official opening will take place at a later date this year.
