Plastics Sector Workshop Held The Plastics Sector Future Research Workshop was held by the Istanbul Chemical Substances and Products Exporters Association (İKMİB) on 5-6 November 2021 in Antalya. The workshop, which brought together the plastics sector, addressed the present and future of the industry. The second sectoral workshop, which addressed problems and solution proposals for İKMİB's sub-sectors as well as the sector's expectations in detail, was held for the plastics sector on 5-6 November 2021. The "Plastics Sector Future Research Workshop" organized by İKMİB in Antalya was attended by İKMİB Board Chairman Adil Pelister, İKMİB Board Accounting Member Tayfun Demir, İKMİB Board Member Murat Akyüz, Plastics Manufacturers Federation (PLASFED) Chairman Ömer Karadeniz, Plastics Manufacturers Association (PAGDER) Chairman Selçuk Gülsün, Glassware Association (ZÜCDER) Board Chairman Mesut Öksüz, Bursa Plastics and Packaging Manufacturers Association (BURPAS) Chairman Kağan Yeşil, Aegean Plastics Manufacturers Solidarity Association (EGEPLASDER) Chairman Şener Gençer, Kayseri Plastics Operators Association (KAYPİDER) Chairman Yusuf Özkan, and İKMİB Board and Supervisory Board members from the Plastics Sector, leading companies in the sector, representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Eximbank representatives, and representatives of sectoral associations such as the Composites Manufacturers Association, FASD and SEPA. On the first day of the two-day workshop, İKMİB Board Chairman Adil Pelister delivered a presentation on work carried out before and during the pandemic and on events to be held in the future. PLASFED Chairman Ömer Karadeniz and PAGDER Chairman Selçuk Gülsün also made remarks assessing the sector. During the two days, expectations and opportunities for the sector's future were discussed, while sector problems and solution proposals were also placed on the table. In the roundtable meetings held, information was exchanged on recycling/circular economy, improving the image of plastics, better communicating the sector to the public, increasing exports, branding in exports and what needs to be done for marketing, and green deal and carbon tax issues.

A Chemical Agency is Needed

İKMİB Board Chairman Adil Pelister, who gave the opening speech at the Plastics Sector Future Research Workshop, said that their target at the beginning of this year was to exceed USD 21 billion, but as a result of the sector's efficient work, they would close the year with exports exceeding USD 24 billion. Stating that the chemical sector would continue its work rapidly with an export target of USD 26.5 billion for 2022 and a target of USD 30 billion in 2023, the 100th anniversary of the Republic, Pelister said: "With the broad spectrum of our chemical sector serving 27 sectors, starting with our plastics sector and together with our sub-sectors such as cosmetics, mineral oils, mineral fuels, adhesives, inorganic and organic chemicals, we provide considerable added value. When we look at the world economy, we see that the chemical sector is strong in eight of the top ten developed countries. Therefore, we need to improve the perspective of our chemical sector accordingly. Together with our Ministry of Industry and Technology, our Ministry of Commerce, our Ministry of Treasury and Finance, our Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and our other Ministries, we must advance the perception of the chemical sector. To do this, I believe that a 'Turkey Chemical Agency' needs to be established for our chemical sector in our country. I also think that having a 'Chemistry Directorate General' specifically related to chemistry within the Industry Ministry would make a very significant contribution to our sector."
