Turkey's plastic industry umbrella organization PLASFED - Plastik Sanayicileri Federasyonu decided to continue under Ömer Karadeniz's leadership at its 4th Ordinary General Assembly meeting.

PLASFED will remain the unified voice of the sector

At the PLASFED General Assembly meeting where approximately 1,500 plastic industry enterprises are represented through the Bursa Plastics and Packaging Manufacturers Association, Aegean Plastics Manufacturers Solidarity Association, Kayseri Plastics Operators Association, Composite Manufacturers Association and the Plastics Manufacturers Association, Chairman Ömer Karadeniz presented the federation's activities for the 2019-2021 period to participants. Emphasizing that PLASFED will continue to be the unified voice of the sector, Ömer Karadeniz stated, "In the coming period, our sector will face difficult tests such as the European Green Deal, bans on single-use plastic products, and carbon border adjustment mechanisms. During these processes, it is crucial that our sector and all civil initiatives representing it speak with one voice. As the umbrella organization of the sector, we will continue to serve as the unified voice of the plastic sector in the coming period and place importance on achieving coordinated work among all institutions." In addition to Ömer Karadeniz, TOBB Packaging Industry Council Chairman and also ISO Istanbul Chamber of Industry Board Member Mustafa Tacir, plastic sector veteran Muammer Yüceler, and İKMİB Istanbul Chemical Substances and Products Exporters Association Board Chairman Adil Pelister addressed the general assembly.

Plastic sector continues to grow through exports

İKMİB Chairman Adil PELİSTER noted that he was very pleased that the plastic sector increased its exports despite the pandemic, stating, "As you know, the plastic sector holds the most significant share in our chemical exports. When we examine the 2020 data, we see that the plastic sector demonstrated positive performance in the first two months of the year, but then experienced a sharp decline in exports as the pandemic spread to our traditional export markets. Fortunately, the sector quickly recovered from this decline and managed to increase its exports on an annual basis. I believe our plastic sector will continue to grow through exports in the coming years and, as PLASFED has continuously emphasized, will transition to higher value-added production," he said.

I follow PLASFED's work with appreciation

Muammer Yüceler, a veteran of the plastic sector, noting that the organization of the plastic sector took place under very difficult circumstances, stated, "In the 1960s and 1970s, at a time when it was very difficult to find raw materials, we founded PAGDER to increase our bargaining power and set out on this path. At this point today, we are pleased to see that every chairman and every board that has come over the years has worked with dedication and built upon the work of their predecessors. In recent times, PLASFED has also done very successful work on this front, and I follow these efforts with appreciation," he said.

We must prepare for the European Green Deal

Mustafa Tacir, who also chairs the Sustainability Platform established within Istanbul Chamber of Industry, stated, "The sustainability issue stands before us as the hottest agenda for the coming period. In particular, the European Green Deal prepared by the EU, our main export market, will deeply affect our sector. If our enterprises are not well prepared for this process, we may face market losses. For this reason, as Chairman Ömer has also mentioned, it is of great importance that all NGOs serving the sector work in coordination," he said.

The 2021-2024 term management and supervisory boards were elected.

At the General Assembly, the list of Principal and Alternate Members of the Board of Directors and Principal and Alternate Members of the Supervisory Board that will serve under Chairman Ömer Karadeniz for the 2021-2024 period was unanimously accepted.
