Corrugated Cardboard Packaging Sector Ended 2020 with Growth
Corrugated Cardboard Manufacturers Association (OMÜD) Board Chairman Buğra Sükan announced that the corrugated cardboard packaging industry completed 2020 with 12 percent growth compared to the previous year.
Noting that the corrugated cardboard packaging industry, one of the sectors strengthening Turkey's real economy, closed 2020 with growth despite the difficult period, Sükan said: "2020 went down in history as a year that challenged the business world due to the pandemic and halted production in some sectors. The corrugated cardboard packaging industry completed 2020 with 12 percent growth compared to the previous year. Corrugated cardboard packaging, which holds critical importance in the supply chain, continued its production uninterrupted despite the pandemic, with necessary precautions taken for employees. The corrugated cardboard sector, which plays a critical role in the storage, transportation and delivery of primary priority consumption items such as food, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products and medical supplies, worked continuously during the pandemic period to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential consumption for society."
Sükan noted that corrugated cardboard production in Turkey reached 2.5 million tons and 4.5 billion square meters in 2020, stating: "Turkey's corrugated cardboard packaging sector ranks as Europe's 6th largest market. The corrugated cardboard sector, with annual turnover approaching TRY 15 billion, continued its operations unabated with nearly 12,000 employees. While the sector's total employment impact reaches 25,000 people, the number of people the sector touches approaches 100,000." he shared.
Expressing that their goal is to climb these steps and reach higher ranks with a commitment to providing high-quality service, Sükan emphasized that to advance the sector to better levels, improvements are needed in ensuring stability in the price and availability of waste paper, which is the raw material of corrugated cardboard, and in increasing the qualified workforce required by the sector.
