Human- and Environment-Friendly Business Model Pays Off
Barilla released its 2017 business and sustainability results. Continuing its work under the mission "Good for you, Good for the planet," Barilla announced that it sources 90 percent of sustainable durum wheat from local sources.
In order to improve its nutritional profile, the company reformulated 26 products last year ranging from sauces to flour products, and introduced 10 new products containing whole wheat and legumes that contribute to balanced nutrition to consumers.
Over the past 7 years, Barilla reduced water consumption by 31 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 24 percent per ton of pasta, and in 2017 continued to support farmers worldwide in the development of sustainable agriculture projects. In 2017, Barilla achieved 3 percent growth worldwide compared to the previous year, generating revenue of EUR 3.47 million. The company forecasts investment of approximately EUR 1 billion over 5 years.
Producing its products across 28 facilities worldwide, including its factory in Bolu, Turkey, Barilla reaches millions of tables in more than 100 countries every day, continuing its global growth while reducing its impact on the environment.

By the end of 2017, Barilla achieved 3 percent growth worldwide, generating revenue of EUR 3,468 million. While achieving growth globally, the group increased its performance particularly in Italy and continued growth in Europe. In Italy and France, the group increased growth performance with the contribution of flour products and pasta as well as health-focused
'Better for You' products, and also achieved successful results in the sauce sector.
EUR 1 Billion Investment Forecast
The group plans to invest approximately EUR 1 billion in industrial assets over five years, with 60 percent of the investments aimed at improving processes, developing existing technologies to increase competitiveness and sustainability.
Barilla will allocate 40 percent of planned investments to innovation and geographic expansion initiatives. Through the investments to be implemented by the group, its factory in Rubbiano will be expanded to become Europe's largest sauce factory with the best technology and energy-saving standards.
Investments outside Italy will focus primarily on business expansion and increasing production capacity.
2020-2030 Sustainability Targets
In its sustainability report, the company announced sustainability targets it aims to achieve between 2018-2020 and 2020-2030. The group aims to increase the number of farmers participating in the "Sustainable Agriculture program" from 5,000 to 10,000 by 2020, while also doubling the amount of sustainable wheat in the Italian supply chain.
Over the next 2 years, the group plans to source 100 percent of main raw materials (durum wheat, semolina, soft wheat flour, rye, tomato, eggs, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil) in accordance with the Barilla Sustainable Agriculture Code. By 2020, compared to 2010, the group aims to reduce carbon emissions and water consumption by 30 percent and establish a zero-waste target in waste areas.
The group plans to expand the 'Better for You' product category, consisting of whole wheat, fiber and protein-rich products which currently account for 8.4 percent of the total, to reach at least 30 percent of total volume by 2030.
Barilla Group aims to develop 'single-serve snacks' over a 12-year period, ensuring that 85 percent of such products it brings to market contain fewer than 150 calories.
