Henkel Uses EasyD4R for Recyclability in Packaging

Recyclable packaging is a prerequisite for a functional circular economy.

Henkel uses EasyD4R, a specially developed software tool, to determine the recyclability of new packaging quickly and reliably. Henkel has made this assessment tool available to the public on its website page, enabling more companies and organizations to use it and making it easier to develop sustainable packaging solutions. Dr. Thorsten Leopold, head of the International Packaging Development department at Henkel working in the home care products sector, said: "We want to promote open collaboration and accelerate the transition to a circular economy. This is only possible if everyone in the value chain works together with a clear definition and consistent assessment approach. By sharing our assessment tool, we want to contribute to the recyclability of packaging." The EasyD4R software is based on the public and recognized criterion catalogues of Plastics Recyclers Europe and is used throughout Henkel. The aim here is to quickly and effectively assess the recyclability of packaging that is currently in the early stages of product development.

This was also confirmed by an independent test carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT). Scientists analyzed this assessment tool and its findings, comparing them with national and international standards.

Dr. Markus Hiebel, head of the Sustainability and Resource Management department at Fraunhofer UMSICHT, said: "With this tool, the recyclability of product packaging can be assessed successfully. We are pleased that companies like Henkel take their responsibilities seriously and contribute to improving recyclability in packaging." EasyD4R assesses packaging recyclability based on its composition and the individual weight ratios of its components, such as primary materials, labels or colors. The software stores suitability information for all materials in question, identification during classification and processing stages during recycling. Based on this, EasyD4R displays clear results in a traffic light assessment system, providing information about the percentage recyclability of each design and the material combinations that would ensure optimal recycling. This also supports the development of sustainable packaging solutions. In its packaging strategy, Henkel has set a target that by 2025* all of its packaging will be recyclable, reusable or compostable. Another target set is to increase the proportion of recycled plastic used in consumer product packaging in Europe to 35%.
