High-Purity Polymer for Food Contact Applications
Solvay launches certified circular raw material-based polymer for childcare products, meeting international safety standards with high purity and food-contact grade
Solvay, a leading global supplier of specialty materials, has entered into a strategic partnership with Hegen Pte Ltd to use sustainable Duradex™ polyphenyl sulfone (PPSU) mass balance in Hegen's premium Press-to-Close, Twist-to-Open™ (PCTO™) baby bottles. This PPSU class circular, fossil-free raw material content is third-party mass balance certified and meets end users' growing expectations for more sustainable products. Duradex™ PPSU is an amorphous, natural amber-transparent polymer free of synthetic pigments, phthalates and bisphenols such as BPA.
Guillaume Meunier, Marketing Manager, Solvay Materials Life Solutions, said, "Brand owners and manufacturers in the childcare market are increasingly seeking to increase the sustainability of their products without compromising on safety, efficiency or comfort." He added, "Hegen's bottles are recognized for their high quality and use materials of the highest purity to provide a healthy and comfortable feeding experience for both mother and child. We are delighted to announce that the company has decided to use our mass balance certified PPSU to mold its iconic bottles."

Yvon Bock, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hegen, added, "We are excited about this strategic material partnership with Solvay, which will help us further reduce the environmental impact of our bottles in line with our ambitious sustainability roadmap." "The circular Duradex™ polymer exhibits the same high performance properties as the previous material used in molding our premium Hegen PCTO™ bottles; including excellent processability and uncompromising durability, making it a highly efficient alternative to fully fossil PPSU solutions."
Duradex™ PPSU MB is linked to 54% allocated circular, fossil-free raw material with third-party mass balance (MB) validation under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification PLUS (ISCC PLUS) mass balance accounting scheme. The MB accounting approach provides a reliable method for tracking raw material content from material production to final application.
Additionally, Solvay's Duradex™ PPSU MB polymer has high resistance to scratching and staining, does not absorb odors and offers a naturally non-stick surface. It combines exceptional hydrolytic stability and shatter-resistant toughness with high heat resistance. These properties also make the lightweight, ergonomically shaped and wide-opening bottles suitable for dishwasher cycles as well as more than 1,000 steam or hot water sterilizations without any risk of damage. Duradex™ is a Solvay trademark.
