"Complete the Glass Cycle" Movement Launched by "European Glass Packaging Industry"

The European Glass Packaging Industry launched the "Close the Glass Loop" initiative to increase glass collection rates for recycling across Europe to 90% by 2030. The initiative comes as a proactive response to new EU regulations aimed at increasing glass packaging recycling to 75% by 2030. GCA General Manager Abdullah Gayret stated: "As GCA, we are leading efforts to communicate to society the sustainability advantages of glass in Turkey and its properties of being 100% and infinitely recyclable. We support Zero Waste efforts and other work conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization to increase the glass recycling rate, which currently stands at 10% in our country. We sincerely believe that through the efforts to be undertaken, this gap between us and Europe will be closed." FEVE President Michel Giannuzzi commented on the matter as follows: "Our objective is to enhance the sustainability element of the glass packaging solutions we provide to our customers and consumers. We are proud of the 'Close the Glass Loop' initiative, which is an undertaking that will bring genuine benefits to both our industry and our planet. 'Close the Glass Loop' is our call to action for the Circular Economy Action Plan." This initiative aims to bring together different stakeholders in the glass packaging collection and recycling cycle on a common European platform to close the glass packaging collection gap and improve the quality of recycled glass (cullet). In this way, resources will maintain their efficiency within the "Bottle-to-Bottle" recycling cycle. Access to greater quantities of quality cullet enables the production of premium-grade, safe and completely recycled material through a resource-efficient manufacturing process. The preference for glass packaging, an infinitely recyclable and reusable permanent material, in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, perfumery and cosmetics as well as in food and beverage sectors, aligns with the principle of "Sustainable Consumption and Production" and, in accordance with the Climate Action Target, results in significant reductions in energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
