Biogas Use and Carbon Emissions Speaking at the panel titled "LNG as a Key Driver of Energy Transition" at the 5th Global LNG Forum held in Hamburg, Germany, Nicotra stated that biogas use can significantly reduce carbon emissions and that idle biogas in nature could make a substantial contribution to this process. Nicotra said that 200 billion tons of biogas are released annually in the natural carbon cycle and that this is 20 percent more than the LNG the world needs. Addressing criticism that biogas is more costly than natural gas, Nicotra said, "This does not stem from production costs. It stems from logistics. Biogas logistics is far more complex because biomass needs to be collected from nature." Nicotra emphasized that the European Union (EU) needs to provide more financial support to this sector, saying that the EU could achieve energy independence if the necessary infrastructure work for biomass collection is carried out. Pointing out that biogas can also be used as Bio-LNG and is far more sustainable than other renewable energy sources, Nicotra said, "For all these reasons, if you need biogas, you can also liquefy it."

Carbon emissions can be reduced by using Bio-LNG instead of diesel fuel

Biomethane Specialist Lorenzo Maggioni stated that biogas obtained from biological waste can be converted to biomethane, and Bio-LNG can be obtained by liquefying biomethane. Maggioni noted that Bio-LNG can be used in ships as well as in heavy vehicles such as trucks and lorries, and that transport-related carbon emissions can be reduced in this way. Maggioni also touched on developments in Bio-LNG in Europe, noting that the continent currently has 20,000 biogas facilities and that the largest Bio-LNG plant produces 9,000 tons of Bio-LNG annually, adding that many countries and companies have increased their investments in Bio-LNG in recent years.
