Şişecam Wins Europe's "Environmental and Social Innovation" Silver Award

Şişecam Group received recognition from Europe for its glass recycling work. Şişecam Group's successful efforts in glass recycling earned it the Silver Award among 55 projects in the "Environmental and Social Innovation" category of the Sustainability Awards organized by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Şişecam Group was deemed worthy of this award for its contributions to resource efficiency, glass recycling and energy efficiency, and glass recycling capital.   Şişecam Group continues to implement projects that raise awareness about recycling practices for sustainable living. Şişecam Group's glass recycling work returned with an award from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development's 27th annual meeting. The results of the Sustainability Awards organized by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have been announced. Şişecam Group won the Silver Award among 55 projects in the "Environmental and Social Innovation" category of the Sustainability Awards for its work in glass recycling and its contributions to resource efficiency, glass recycling and energy efficiency, and glass recycling capital. The EBRD awards annually in the environmental and social field the most successful projects among all operations in its region across four categories: Sustainable Energy, Climate Resilience, Environmental and Social Best Practice, and Environmental and Social Innovation. The winners of the 2018 awards, with a total of 55 nominated projects, were determined following an evaluation conducted by four independent jury members. Candidates were evaluated by an independent panel according to four criteria: "standards and best practice", "innovation", "visible impact", and "capacity building". The awards were presented at a ceremony held in Jordan.

Significant for Sustainable Production

Şişecam Group's glass recycling activities are of considerable importance for sustainable production. Using glass cullet at a 10 percent ratio as input in glass production results in a 12 percent reduction in raw materials, 2.5 percent reduction in energy, and 5 percent reduction in carbon emissions. Glass, a packaging material that can be recycled 100 percent without any loss of quality, requires only one unit of glass bottle waste as input to produce one glass bottle. Recycling one glass bottle generates enough electricity savings to run a computer for 25 minutes or a television for 20 minutes.
