Humanity has begun to focus more on the issue of remediation of water, our fundamental life source that becomes increasingly polluted with each passing day. Indeed, no resource on earth is infinite. For this reason, it is the responsibility of every individual to both use resources economically and work to transform them. We know that nowadays states conduct special work on resource separation and conversion. It can be said that the best thing we can do for our future is to use the resources at hand in the best way possible and subsequently recover and reuse them. Wastewater treatment processes are not only used for drinking water safety; the contaminants contained prevent damage to systems that require water. In this article, we would like to address questions such as what wastewater is, how it can be recovered, what processes and chemicals are needed for separation.

What Is Wastewater?

"Wastewater" refers to water that remains or is discharged after being used in places such as homes, businesses, institutions and factories. In addition to water contaminated as a result of domestic, industrial, agricultural and other uses, water from mining operations and ore processing facilities, and water resulting from rainfall becoming surface or subsurface flow from areas such as streets, parking lots and similar areas in built-up and unbuilt city areas are all defined as wastewater. Most wastewater is mixed into sewage systems; however, in some places, due to location or other circumstances, there may be no sewer connection and the wastewater there needs to be pumped out.

What Are the Types of Wastewater?

• Domestic wastewater, • Black water, • Greywater, • Industrial wastewater,
  • Cooling water,
• Wastewater generated in cleaning processes, • Wastewater from process in industrial production

What Are Wastewater Treatment Methods?

- Nanofiltration, - Ultrafiltration, - Ultraviolet water treatment method, - Activated carbon water treatment method, - Sand filtration treatment method, - Demineralization, - Reverse osmosis.

Why Should Wastewater Be Treated?

Treatment of wastewater is not only for recycling; filling surface water sources, and for urban, agricultural, industrial, environmental and aquaculture purposes. When wastewater is discharged into sewage or into receiving environments without treatment, foul-smelling gases are produced as a result of certain chemical reactions. When the damage that these wastewaters would leave is added to this, it is only a matter of time before they cause health problems. Wastewater contains many disease-causing substances. Wastewater can also contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals. Therefore, this situation is fraught with various environmental and health problems. Nearly all treated or untreated wastewater eventually mixes with our nature by day's end. Wastewater treatment is essential for the protection of clean nature and drinking water.

Purpose and Scope of Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater treatment encompasses one or more of the physical, chemical and biological processes applied to bring wastewater generated as a result of various uses to a state that does not change the physical, chemical, bacteriological and ecological characteristics of the receiving environment into which they are discharged. Primary, secondary and advanced treatment methods are used according to the wastewater characteristics in order to remove contaminants in wastewater. The purpose of wastewater treatment and recovery is to protect existing water sources and reduce the pollution load on clean water sources. The pollution load is the mass of solid matter in wastewater or sludge in relation to time. The treatment process roughly consists of three stages. These stages are: primary, secondary and advanced treatment stages. Primary treatment includes physical treatment units that encompass operations for the removal of floating and settling solids in wastewater. Secondary treatment includes biological and/or chemical treatment units used in the removal of organic matter. Advanced treatment, in addition to these operations, encompasses processes used in the removal of contaminants not removed in secondary treatment. This treatment process can be performed by chemical, physical or biological means. This treatment process can be performed by physical, chemical or biological means: Chemical treatment occurs when various chemicals are added in the fast and slow mixing units of wastewater, and these chemicals react with contaminants in the wastewater and precipitate. Biological treatment is achieved through biological degradation of domestic or industrial wastewater with the help of aerobic or anaerobic bacteria. Physical treatment is the removal of oils and coarse solids from wastewater through mechanical processes without using any chemicals or bacteria, using screens, skimming paddles and similar devices.

Chemicals used in wastewater treatment facilities:

Salt, chlorine, antiscalant, caustic, hydrochloric acid (HCl), membrane cleaning chemicals, polyelectrolyte, and auxiliary chemicals including: ferrous sulfate, ferric chloride, aluminum chloride, aluminum sulfate, copper sulfate, lime, barium chloride, aluminum chloride hydroxide, polyaluminum chloride hydroxide sulfate (PACS), polyamine (POLYAMINE), polydadmac (POLYDADMAC).

What Is Achieved Through the Reuse and Recovery of Wastewater?

• It provides water savings, • Creates an alternative water source during dry seasons, • Provides additional treatment to wastewater before mixing with groundwater, • Enables urban wastewater to be disposed of in an environmentally safe and economical manner, • Reuse of wastewater at its source reduces discharges to receiving environments. Thus, it reduces the pollution of rivers and channels and other surface water sources, • Reduces artificial fertilizer requirements and provides savings in nutrients, • Increases crop yield.   Prepared by: Dila Taşcı
