Archroma's Barrier Against Odours Archroma is launching a new PFC-free* and ammonia-free* Cartaseal® VWAF barrier for odour-resistant paper-based food packaging. Archroma, a global leader in specialty chemicals for sustainable solutions, has announced the launch of Cartaseal® VWAF, a new perfluorinated compound (PFC)-free* and ammonia-free* barrier coating for odour-resistant packaging applications. (Photo source: Archroma)[/caption] Archroma is recognised for its innovations and sustainable solution systems that help packaging and paper manufacturers optimise their productivity and/or create value in their markets. The versatile Cartaseal® series offers barrier solutions that can be used in both packaging and food packaging applications such as pizza boxes, sandwich slices, fresh vegetables, fast-food service and general supermarket packaging to protect against grease, oil, water and water vapour. The new Cartaseal® VWAF, the latest addition to the series, has been developed in line with Archroma's principles: "Archroma's Path to a Sustainable World: Safe, efficient, advanced, it is in our nature." The innovative Cartaseal® VWAF is designed to create a continuous, flawless film-like coating on the paper surface. The resulting barrier delivers class-leading performance against the penetration of oils, solid fats, water and vapour. The odour-free product is also ideal for food packaging applications where the taste and odour of the packaged food can be extremely sensitive to the environment and must be carefully preserved for the consumer to fully benefit. Due to its superior performance, Cartaseal® VWAF can be used in applications where resistance to water, oil and solid fats and water vapour condensation is required, not only as a replacement for PFC-based coatings but also as a more sustainable alternative to plastic. Developed with food packaging in mind, Cartaseal® VWAF complies with FDA and BfR requirements for food-contact applications. It is also compatible with eco-labels such as various annexes of EU Flower, Nordic Swan and Blue Angel, and is of course REACH registered. More importantly, since the coating will degrade along with the paper during the recycling process, Cartaseal® VWAF offers greater potential for compostability, repulping and recyclability compared to PFCs and plastics. [caption id="attachment_135977" align="aligncenter"] (Photo: Archroma)[/caption] Cartaseal® VWAF is at the core of the new PACK IT CLEAN system, recently launched by Archroma and combined with a primer solution for cases where a binder or pre-coat can also be used to further enhance performance. The PACK IT CLEAN system can be found in the online Archroma System Selector. Andy Bell, Head of Specialty Chemicals Competence Centre at Archroma, said: "Consumers and regulators are paying increasingly close attention to how products are made, and rightly so. What we do at Archroma with innovations like Cartaseal® VWAF is exactly that. Because it is in our nature." *Below the detection limit according to industry standard test methods. ® Archroma trademark registered in many countries. Source
