Mini Wind Power Plant Competition to Be Held for 2,000 Megawatts
Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tancan: "We are considering conducting Renewable Energy Resource Area competitions in wind energy as well. We plan to announce a mini wind power plant competition for 2,000 megawatts," he said.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Abdullah Tancan made assessments at a meeting organized online by the Turkish Wind Energy Association on the topic "Turkey Wind Energy Market Outlook: Lessons from Domestic and Global Markets and Business Model Comparisons."
Tancan stated that the ratio of operating wind power plants to total installed capacity reached 9.5 percent as of the end of February, and reported that wind energy-based electricity installed capacity has increased within the scope of targets in the Ministry's 2019-2023 strategic plan.
Tancan noted that wind energy-based electricity generation in 2020 reached approximately 25 billion kilowatt-hours and continued his remarks as follows:
"Looking at 2018 data, we rank fifth in Europe and tenth in the world in wind energy production. Wind energy is the renewable energy source with the highest value in terms of installed capacity after hydroelectric power plants in Turkey. As of the end of February, we have reached 9,192 megawatts of wind energy installed capacity.
We are considering conducting the mini Renewable Energy Resource Area (YEKA) competitions that we have carried out in the solar energy sector in wind energy as well. We plan to announce a mini YEKA wind power plant competition for 2,000 megawatts. Our consultations with the sector are ongoing. Our constant approach is this: let us design the best competition conditions from the start so there are no changes, but we will also evaluate any changes to the specifications that may be necessary based on requests from you in the sector."
Green supply agreements gaining momentum
Enis Amasyalı, General Manager of Borusan EnBW Energy, a company from Borusan Group, said that green energy supply agreements have increased over the years in the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific regions. Amasyalı emphasized that the capacity of green energy supply agreements in these regions has reached 25.2 gigawatts, stating: "In a world where prices are continuously falling and incentive mechanisms are in a sense weakening, different financing needs are required. To the extent that the relevant country's macroeconomic data and market dynamics permit, green energy supply agreements come to the forefront. This is triggered by alignment with the United Nations' sustainable development goals. Companies take sustainable development goals into account in their financing calculations." he said. Pointing out that the steps Turkey has taken to upgrade its renewable energy potential to the next level through hybrid and storage facilities have become the most important agenda items for the sector in recent times, Amasyalı spoke as follows: "As a sector, hybrid and storage facilities that we await with hope in the short and medium term will create new business models for us through the relevant regulations. With the commercialization of storage, by adding storage to this, essentially converting our power plants into partial base-load plants is among our objectives. On the other hand, offshore wind power plants have reached 35.6 gigawatts globally. According to an analysis by the World Bank, Turkey's technical offshore capacity is 70 gigawatts, and this potential should also be evaluated." Ali Karaduman, Chief Executive Officer of Güriş Holding Energy Group, said they are willing to increase clean energy capacity despite adverse conditions in 2020 and 2021. Stating that they want to manufacture Turkish-branded turbines and equipment, Karaduman said: "We can send Turkish-made turbine equipment primarily to Turkish republics, and to Middle Eastern and North African countries.
