Significant Increase in pH Sensor Service Life and Enhanced Process Efficiency Demanding process conditions at a chemical facility meant pH sensors lasted only four weeks. Now robust sensors with intelligent diagnostics offer a service life of one year or more. Additionally, measurement point management is far less frequent and considerably more efficient.
Global Specialty Chemical Manufacturer
One of the world's leading specialty chemical companies operates a facility in Germany where it produces silanes, fillers, matting agents, bleaching agents and oxidizing agents, and detergent raw materials. In several units of the facility, hydrochloric acid recovery and off-gas purification require strict pH control to ensure process efficiency. To provide consistently reliable pH measurements, most measurement points are equipped with two extra pH sensors.
Demanding Process Conditions Result in Very Short Sensor Service Life
Due to harsh conditions, pH sensors installed in these processes had a service life of only four weeks; because the sensors were analog and therefore required calibration at the measurement point, sensor maintenance became frequent and time-consuming. The combination of short sensor life and high maintenance requirements meant that the costs associated with taking these measurements were excessive. The facility's electronic engineers asked Mettler Toledo whether we could offer a more robust solution requiring less maintenance. We were pleased to provide a test system that met and exceeded their requirements.
Exceptional Sensor Service Life
After one month of testing, the electronic engineers at the facility were extremely satisfied with the stability of the Mettler Toledo sensors. ISM diagnostics also showed the engineers how well the probes tolerate the processes.
Low Measurement Point Operating Costs
The facility purchased Mettler Toledo pH measurement systems at 33 points for hydrochloric acid recovery and off-gas purification operations. The long sensor service life combined with the benefits of ISM means these processes can now operate much more efficiently and at significantly lower cost.
