Bloom Energy Launches Advanced CHP Solution for Net Zero Heating and Cooling
Bloom Energy (NYSE:BE) is now offering the Bloom Energy Server™ as a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solution that utilizes high-temperature (>350°C) exhaust streams for industrial steam generation and absorption cooling.
Approximately 50% of global industrial energy use is for steam generation. Our high-temperature exhaust stream can generate steam. Customers can now use the Bloom Energy Server not only to produce highly efficient clean electricity, but also to generate high-temperature steam without additional fuel input; this significantly reduces operating costs and carbon emissions. Bloom technology offers a decarbonization pathway not found in legacy CHP systems for industries ranging from chemicals to oil and refining, pulp and paper to food processing and primary metals.
Additionally, rising temperatures are significantly increasing cooling demand. Today, nearly all cooling operations are powered by electricity. Large power consumers such as data centers use up to 40% of their electricity for cooling. Electrically powered cooling uses hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) as refrigerant fluids, which are extremely potent greenhouse gases.
Bloom's offering will enable customers to replace HFC refrigerants with absorption chillers that do not use HFCs.
Bloom's advanced CHP solution is particularly attractive for some of the world's largest CHP markets including Germany, South Korea, Italy, Japan, and the United States; nearly half of the CHP systems operating in these regions are over 20 years old and ready for replacement. Bloom has already signed a contract with Geothermie-Gesellschaft Bruchsal GmbH, a subsidiary of EnBW (Energie Baden-Württemberg AG), an energy holding company based in Stuttgart, which is Bloom's first advanced CHP customer in Germany.
Ravi Prasher, Chief Technology Officer at Bloom Energy, said, "An optimal CHP solution must have high electrical efficiency, high-temperature heat, and high overall efficiency. Other technologies, such as internal combustion engines or low-temperature fuel cells, do not have the capacity to achieve all three of these characteristics, but Bloom's solution can. This is another example of our innovative low-carbon energy offerings. With these new CHP capabilities and electrical efficiency of more than 50%, Bloom Energy can achieve combined efficiency of more than 90% and provide high-temperature heat."
