The Numbers Are Serious

Workers face numerous hazards in the workplace every day. While some threats cause minor harm, others can be fatal. In fact, according to joint research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), nearly 2 million people worldwide lose their lives each year due to hazards in the workplace. According to the same research, 450,000 of these deaths result from lung diseases linked to respiratory risks in the work environment. Murat Şengül, Director of Corporate Solutions at Ülke Endüstriyel, which provides products and services for efficiently managing occupational health and safety conditions in businesses, offered some comments on the matter.

Always wear a mask when working with chemicals

There are many precautions to consider when working with chemicals. Gaseous chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream through the lungs via respiration and seriously threaten worker health. Liquid chemicals can cause severe injuries to the skin. For this reason, workers exposed to chemicals must use appropriate personal protective equipment such as masks, mask filters, and gloves selected specifically for the classification of the chemical in question. This is of vital importance.

Build awareness

Workers sometimes fail to recognize workplace risks or fail to take hazards seriously, which can result in negligent behavior. Failing to take necessary precautions can lead to serious health problems for workers. Employers who wish to minimize vital risks must build awareness among workers about the impact of hazardous conditions in their work environment on health. To do this, various training sessions or drills on occupational health and safety and proper use of personal protective equipment must be provided.  

Learn first aid

Every employer has a responsibility to maintain a safe work environment. Even when workers are aware, accidents or emergencies can occur. To be prepared for such situations, it is of vital importance that a sufficient number of workers in every workplace knows first aid procedures. Employers can send workers to first aid courses or invite trainers to the work environment and ensure all workers receive first aid training. Additionally, it is extremely important to ensure that first aid equipment that must always be available in the work environment is complete and in working condition.  

Do not neglect routine inspections and necessary maintenance

It may not be possible to eliminate vital hazards in work environments, but it is possible to minimize them through small precautions. To do this, physical conditions in the work environment should be inspected at regular intervals, necessary personal protective equipment should be complete and ready for use, and required maintenance on equipment should be performed at regular intervals. Additionally, work schedules and shifts and other processes that directly affect worker tempo should be continuously reviewed to ensure appropriateness.
