Tosaf Launches HFFR Additive to Market Tosaf has introduced FR9185PE, a halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) additive developed for both crosslinked and non-crosslinked polyethylene foams. The additive helps prevent the spread and acceleration of fire even at low concentrations. FR9185PE thereby facilitates compliance with strict fire-protection standards in sectors such as construction, pipe insulation, automotive and shipping packaging. Its high corrosion resistance, dimensional stability and thermal insulation have led to increasingly wider application of PE foams as acoustic and mechanical dampeners, as well as in flooring, pipe insulation and decorative elements. However, the low fire resistance of PE foams requires the addition of flame retardants. Tosaf has expanded its flame retardant masterbatch product range to include solutions that do not compromise foam properties while ensuring compliance with international fire-protection standards. The new FR9185PE, the latest representative of these HFFR masterbatches, is suitable for both non-crosslinked and crosslinked PE foams. In the event of fire, its phosphorus-based active content reacts with free radicals generated, triggering a gaseous mechanism that stops combustion. 10 to 15 percent of this product is required to achieve performance comparable to halogen-based mechanisms. By contrast, other halogen-free systems based on the formation of a protective layer that extinguishes fire or water vapor to cool combustion require additional dosages of 30 to 60 percent. FR9185PE provides effective dispersion in foam and does not adversely affect foam nucleation and crosslinking levels, producing a high-quality foam product with compatible cell structure and preserved mechanical properties and thermal stability.
