SABIC Powers GENBETA's Electric Vehicle
SABIC has officially announced that its materials are being used in applications in the GENBETA vehicle, which holds the Guinness World Records™ title for the highest speed achieved by a vehicle indoors.
SABIC leveraged its application development expertise and materials science knowledge to help design and develop the latest-generation components of the GENBETA vehicle, a high-performance electric vehicle based on the GEN3 model.
In doing so, SABIC played a significant role in the production of the fastest, lightest and most powerful electric vehicle, once again demonstrating its commitment to enabling a global transition to electrification and carbon neutrality.
SABIC's participation in and integration into the GENBETA program forms an integral part of the company's collaborative innovation partnership with the world's first fully electric FIA World Championship.
The SABIC materials integrated into the GENBETA vehicle's applications are high-performance engineering thermoplastics that provide design freedom through their natural processing moldability compared to many other materials. Such thermoplastics can contribute to acceleration and speed performance by helping to improve the vehicle's aerodynamics.
Relevant applications include front wing endplate assemblies, created using an additive manufacturing or 3D printing process known as fused deposition modeling and mounted to the outer ends of the vehicle's front wing.
These form an integral part of redirecting air flow around the front wheels to help reduce friction while contributing to the vehicle's downforce and balance.
In addition, wheel vanes are produced through injection molding using sustainably mechanically recycled thermoplastics from SABIC's TRUCIRCLE™ circular materials portfolio.
These parts are mounted to wheel rims in a radial, wire-spoke-like arrangement and are designed to optimize air flow and reduce aerodynamic friction for higher acceleration and speed performance. Additionally, the vanes can improve the vehicle's overall efficiency and assist in cooling the brakes to increase stopping power.
The wind deflector is a coated thermoplastic sheet product produced through extrusion using a biologically renewable, low-carbon material from the TRUCIRCLE portfolio. This component is fitted to the front of the cockpit, ahead of the driver, and contributes to increased speed performance by supporting air flow optimization to reduce friction.
As SABIC collaborates with Formula E and its partners, it is leveraging its thermoplastic portfolio developed and continuing to expand under dedicated solution platforms for electrification (BLUEHERO™) and the circular economy (TRUCIRCLE).
