Rocket Lab Installs Largest AFP Machine for Neutron Rocket Production

Rocket Lab has begun the installation process of the industry's largest automated fiber placement (AFP) machine to accelerate the production process of its Neutron rocket. The 90-ton machine, manufactured by Electroimpact, will measure 11.89 meters in height and 29.87 meters in length.
The AFP machine will enable automation in the production of carbon composite rocket structures, playing a critical role in manufacturing large-scale rocket components.
The AFP machine has carbon fiber laying capacity at a speed of 99.97 meters per minute and will reduce production time by approximately 150,000 hours. Additionally, it includes an integrated inspection system that can detect defects on laminated carbon composites in real time during the placement process. This system will improve production quality and minimize errors.
Rocket Lab CEO Sir Peter Beck emphasized that this machine will revolutionize the Neutron rocket and other aerospace projects. This technology will provide speed and efficiency not only for Neutron but also in the general production of large-scale aerospace components. With this step, Rocket Lab aims to increase its rocket production capacity while also establishing critical infrastructure in preparation for future space missions.
