Nylon Production from Carbon Dioxide
Researchers working at the Carbon Dioxide Utilisation Centre (CDUUK) in the United Kingdom are conducting studies on nylon production from carbon dioxide.
Dr. Peter Styring, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Sheffield University, said: "It may sound like a crazy idea to think this is possible, but we have done it. Instead of fossil fuels as raw materials, you can turn the industry on its head by using waste carbon dioxide through certain chemical methods. This creates a revolution in the petrochemical sector."
Producing plastic from carbon dioxide requires advanced catalysts. These are substances that are not consumed in the production process but accelerate the chemical reaction.
Covestro, a petrochemical group based in Germany, has produced mattresses that are 20 per cent composed of carbon dioxide. Researchers have discovered a catalyst that triggers a chemical reaction between CO2 and other compounds, leading to the formation of certain chemicals used in polyurethane production. Polyurethane material is used in mattress and pillow manufacturing and refrigerator insulation, with annual production of 15 million tonnes. Using CO2 as a raw material can help reduce carbon emissions.
